ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) - JJ Racaza might be the best pistol shooter in the world
"I've been doing this since around 1988, so 27 years now," Racaza said.
But it wasn't always that way.
"I was in The Philippines. I needed to learn how to shoot to be able to defend the family."

Eventually, Racaza and his infectious smile made it to the United States. But the financial toll of moving to the U.S. kept Racaza off the range until the late 90s.
"In '99, we were able to start again," he said. "Since then, I haven't stopped."
'Haven't stopped' is right. Racaza has won so much, he can't keep count. When asked how many tournaments and championships he's won, he couldn't come up with a number.
"Uh, a few. I don't know exactly," he said.

I was really surprised at all the big names that went out to that match being that is was a 1st year match in the middle of nowhere. First year matches are always a crap shoot, sometimes they're great because the local crews put all their effort into it being excited about the first year and sometimes they're a ****show because the director doesn't know how to run a match at that level. I don't know the guys in Odessa at all but everyone I've seen said it was a great match.

There was actually a pretty famous actress that shot the match as well. She's got 156 acting credits on IMDB. I'll let you guess who that is.

Barry hopes it helps draw more attention and more people into the sport. So, maybe one day, West Texas can supply its own Jessie Harrison or JJ Racaza.
One of the best Production division shooters used to be in Odessa. I hadn't heard from him in a long time, just checked he's deleted his Facebook so not sure what he's up to these days, but he isn't shooting anymore.

I was going to try shooting USPSA more this year but I haven't even started practicing for Texas 3-Gun and that's less than 2 weeks away.

Im still on the waiting list for TX3G and Aaron Hays said that me being 15 slots out means Im probably not getting in.

Although one of the event sponsors has an open slot and I may get to shoot if they decide to give it to me. I was told I have a real shot of getting it.

Crossing my fingers.

It mentions in the story that when he moved from The Philippines, he had to take six years off because his family couldn't afford it. They spent everything moving to the U.S.

Lex,

have you watched any of this year's TX3G stage videos?

If so the all shotgun jungle run, he says 30 targets, and there are 30, but many of them he calls poppers so that normally means a clay is getting thrown.

But if that is the case its more like 40 targets.

Any idea if they would call something a popper then not put in a clay to be thrown?

Popper is just the name of that style of steel target. He would have mentioned tossed clays if there were some. I don't think it's possible for thrown clays with any of those as they're in the woods.

I thought J.J. Racaza looked familiar. Turns out he was on the Top Shot TV show (placed 3rd) That was a fun show, wouldn't mind seeing a revival.

Thank you

I also found out I have a spot. I should be shooting with the Lima Charlie guys as they gave me a spot from one of theirs that can't go.

Yeah I saw Athena in that video as well. She's from Texas, got eliminated on Top Shot because her arms were too short to shoulder a Thompson. You'll see quite a few of them at the different matches.
