Anyone have any advice? Will be bow hunting for the first time, hunting turkey for the first time. I'm not sure how the scouting process works or if I'll be able to select my area to hunt but would love some info if anyone is familiar with the process.

Also, if any DOD card holders would like to join me and show me the ropes, that would be awesome. Won't be able to make opening weekend but hope to try the second and third weekends.

Not many folks on here with access to Bullis.

Do you get to harvest pigs during the spring archery turkey season there?

I assume you have been to their website about it, but my advice would be to call their hunting program guys and ask. I know the deer hunting is only by lottery, but I am not sure how crowded the spring turkey season is out there. I would not drag my feet about purchasing permits just in case, since the permits are for specific dates only. There are scouting permits available also, but I don't know how the scheduling and selection of areas works. I have worked out there as a contractor, and dealt with quite a few of their wildlife folks and they are good people, but I have not been hunting there and couldn't tell you anything specific about how it works. I do know that their range control procedures seemed to change every couple of months, so anything printed on the net is probably out of date by now, which is why I would call directly to get any questions you have answered.

From what I understand, a general hunting permit, which is all you need for turkey, also includes exotics and pigs.

Same here, don't know much about the hunting situation and how it works, but I do go out there several times a year for work. It seems every time I go, I see a flock of turkeys feeding along the creek that runs along side wilderness road on base. It's one of my favorite places to go for work, especially when they are on the shooting range and the sound of freedom is echoing back off the hill.

I did a project across the street from Bullis one time - only thing I can tell you about that installation is that they shoot the ever living hell out of their .50 BMG's. That was music to my ears in the mornings.

For me, the funniest thing was seeing the big herd of axis always hanging out in the creek bottom right behind the hunting headquarters. Those deer knew nobody could touch them down there. But I agree about it being one of my favorite places to work. Our site was out in one of the areas being left alone for golden cheeked warbler habitat, and there was an amazing amount of wildlife wandering around back there.
