Sorry - I searched for a past thread but couldn't find info. I know most do not want hogs around but we have just as much fun doing night hog hunts as we do deer so we are good with both for now.

I haven't used a deer feeder in 30+years (back then we'd make our own) so I'm not familiar with any brands. I see some have electronic deterrents for coons/etc. We have both open pasture and thickets. Located between CS and Waco.

Also, what kind of feed? "Deer Corn" wasn't much available back in my days. I guess it depends on if we want hogs or deer but I'd like something that would be good for both. Mineral licks? We don't run cows anymore so that shouldn't be a problem.

Finally, any best practices as to when to begin feeding for deer or is year-round the best (assuming the cost doesn't break the bank).

Thanks for any help from the experts around here.

All Season Feeder. Pin in for deer will help keep corn on the ground. I run corn year round with a figure 6/C pin outside of season and close it in during season.

Thanks. Dumb question but what is a "pin in" and 6C?

Surrounding the feeder with hog panels to keep pigs out. The figure 6 is a layout that lets pigs in but not out.

Interesting information and video on the panel types.

This is the feeder you want

Also feed a mix of corn and roasted soybeans year round

Ooh look at me, I can afford soybeans.

Jk. If you can afford soybeans, it works well. Especially if there are a lot of acorns on the ground. At least that has been my experience.

Started buying AllSeasons Feeders stand and fill feeders 3 years ago. I'll probably never buy anything else.

Bag of protein and bag of corn/soy mix costs about the same

Also the coons can't wipe out a broadcast feeder as easy as a feee choice

Looking at the AllSeasons Feeders - there are tons to choose from. Being that I'm very green in the form of broadcast feeders (we would just dump bag$ of corn out on the ground in the old days), I'd sure appreciate any buying advice. It looks like Producers in Bryan has them. Thanks!

The word is pen, not pin, in both references in his post.

Whatever type of feeder you decide to use, make sure it is staked to the ground to keep hogs from destroying it.

I'm moving toward stand and fills. I'm not 25 anymore and eager to climb ladders to fill barrel feeders.

Plain old corn is fine to use in your feeders. Deer and hogs will eat it with no problems.

What we did was to place the hog panel around half the circular area where the corn is distributed. That way there is always corn for the deer.
