Using natural gas for a propane fire pit.

I have a propane fire pit and am tired of blowing through tanks, so I bought a hose and hooked it up to a tee on my natural gas line I already have on my deck for my grill.

I unhooked the hose that came with the fire pit that has the regulator on it. Now it's just a hose directly screwed into the pit.

It puts out gas, more loudly then the propane did, and the fire works but is really small, even turned all the way up.

Is there a remedy for this?

Check the orifice size. Propane and natural gas are different - nat gas is bigger.

Nat Gas has less heating value than Propane, so you need to use more by volume.

Basically you need to drill out the orifices in the burner. You should be able to find out some info or guidelines on how large to go with.

If I'm not mistaken, you need a conversion kit to go from propane to natural gas. I'm guessing that's why you aren't getting the same performance.

is that the piece between my new grey hose and the flexible hose?

Or is orifice up in the fire pit bowl at the end of the flex hose?

My CharBroil conversion kit was a longer hose w/ quick connect and a tool to remove the propane orifice. $60.

Yes. It's right where the flame is created. May unscrew and be replaceable. Else drill out

You may also have to restrict the oxygen supply also to get an orange flame.

When I did this the original Venturi setup supplied too much O2 and it burned blue. Couldn't see it in the daylight.

So I pulled orifice off and drilled a 1/8" hole, based on instructions from some random fire pit conversion kit I saw.

It works about like normal, but I smell gas. Some of it is getting through without combusting somehow?

Is that fixable? Maybe I did too big of a hole?

There is a joke somewhere in your last statement.

Order a new orifice for your fire pit. That's the safest bet.

You have to covey the air mixing ports. Use duct tape. Nat gas does not need to be mixed like propane does

Yep, need to drill out the orifices in your burner. My dad and I did the same thing on a turkey fryer once, just went one drill size above the existing orifice and it worked beautifully.
