I'll go first. Body isn't fat enough to be a cottonmouth.

There is a thread for that! But I second the diamond back water snake, thanks to the ever educational, and pinned at the top Snake thread.

agree on the water snake. You can see at least 2 vertical lines on its lower jaw

For reference, this is what a cottonmouth looks like

the head is attached; therefore it is a bad snake

It's definitely not a water moccasin but looks like a cottonmouth.

100% non-venomous and it appears to be a plain-bellied water snake. I would post on the snake thread for confirmation from 12fmane or Badace. It is not a DBWS or a cottonmouth...

When I ask something and I get a 50% "bro, pick it up and make it a pet" and 50% "BUY THERMAL AND SHOOT IT'S NUTS OFF", I'm not trusting my life with y'all. Especially when it's a snake. Just shoot them all. We are all stocked up enough on ammo by now anyways.

if you can afford to shoot snakes indiscriminately, go for it... otherwise, know that the majority of snakes spotted are non-venomous

Moccasin's have a shorter blunter tail ......I vote water snake. Did you get a look at it's eyes? If so did it have slitted cat eyes like in marbles or round pupils ?

Cottonmouths have a very distinct brow ridge. You don't even need the rest of the body to identify a cottonmouth. In fact, I'd say that the best way to
Misidentify a cottonmouth is by using colors and patterning.

Pic resolution not great - maybe my phone.

But that triangular shaped head and what look like pits on nose gets that snake killed on my place.

Water snake. You can vaguely see the 'lip stitches' which is a giveaway it's not a cottonmouth/moccasin. Almost all snakes can make their head appear triangular so that should never really be used to identify. A side view is best to distinguish between a water snake and cottonmouth. Left - cottonmouth. Right - water snake.

Image flagged?!? Weird.

This is a young Nerodia erythrogaster. Depending on where you are and the snakes adult phenotype (which varies regionally), the species has several common names including: yellow bellied water snake, plain bellied water snake, and blotched water snake. Those three subspecies are the ones we see in Texas the most.

It is not a Diamondback water snake Nerodia rhombifer.

Heh, I just found out my neighbors have the same snake policy I do: catch it and dump it on the edge of the property. I think of the two of them, she's actually less concerned about them than he is. My wife still doesn't like snakes but they don't totally intimidate her like they used to.

Well dern it, time to switch from the ammo thread back to the snake thread for more edumacation on snake ids.

Is it because this picture is looking straight down that it's harder to tell that it is YBWS? Or is the difference pretty subtle between those and DBWS?

Based on the Snek Thread I'm confident in water snake now, but the variations always throw me.
