Costco has a Big Horn 18.46 cu ft safe for 549, normally 749. Anyone have any info on these? Is this a good deal or can someone recommend something better for a similar price?

The Boss says I can buy no more guns until we get a safe.

It really depends on what your goals are.

Any safe is better than no safe. Buy as much gun capacity as you can afford.

Steel thickness is buying you time. Balance out for your self cost of safe vs what is in it vs what is insured.

For me it is mostly to keep kids, kids friends, and guests away from guns. So a tall school locker with a cheap lock would honestly work.

Remember that the realistic capacity for long guns is about half of the stated capacity on the safe.

So if you have 10 long guns, get a 24 capacity safe to hold them with spare room to buy a few more.

Someone here posted these storage rods and they are a game changer. I've got a storage locker that currently has more guns than the stated capacity thanks to these.

. This is why I got one. To keep stuff "safe" from guests and kids. I have no delusions that a determined criminal is not going to get in.

Most of the safes people but are rated as residential security containers, which means they can be accessed with tools in 5 minutes. You have to spend some real money to get a better rating.

While many most vendors claim this or that makes their safe better they don't stand by it by proving the safe takes longer to get into and paying UL to certify it as such.

For me, if a vendor isn't willing to stand by their claims, there is a reason. I bought a bighorn safe a while ago, like others it served me well keeping my kids and their friends from accessing things they shouldn't have.

I was under no illusion an experienced criminal would have a hard time with it.

The most important thing imo, bolt it down and buy as big as you can afford. Usually what you pay for is better fire protection rating, rather than theft protection.

i use the rifle rods as well and recommend them to everyone when talking about space inside a safe.

I'm considering picking one up... in store they have a a sanctuary for $499 which was a bit smaller but has a light and claims 60 minute fire and 7 day waterproof... I could see it going on special sometime in store as well, but not sure when...

Position it in a small room or closet where they don't have much room to work or gain access to the sides. If it is bolted down and they can only get at the door, it is usually harder for them to get in. Most safe doors are better than their shells. Just depends on what you buy.
