Anyone on here repair reels around B/CS? I have a early 90's 5500c that was my late Grandpa's that I would like to get working. Handle spins but spool and level wind do not work.

I think there is a guy. I'm in San Antonio but if I was there I'd fix it up for the price of parts. i doubt you need anything other than complete disassembly and cleaning. I have a lot of stuff from when I repaired my personal collection and reels I bought for 5 bucks because "they were broken".

Or....if you want to take a stab at it, they are pretty simple to work on. That model like my has bushings and maybe one bearing if any. I know what your issue is but I can't explain it over a post. You'd have to see that reel work from the inside with the pawls and catches to see. It's probably just gummed up. With the exception of a few parts, everything in that reel is brass or steel. I've never seen anything BROKEN in them. Dirty, corroded....hell yes...especially the ones people used for saltwater.

DIY it. Those reels have very simple components and are very easy to clean. Watch YouTube videos to help you.

If you are interested in looking at it shoot me an email. rwwubbenhorst at hotmail dot com.

I agree with the above. Doubt anything is broken, just don't know why it isn't working.

Parts are cheap, you can fix it! I fixed up grandads old Penn 109 just for shiggles a few years back & it still works great

Don't be afraid to take it apart yourself. Look on the foot where it attaches to the rod and write the number down. Use that to search Google for the schematics. Dads Ole Tackle in Conroe has Abu parts if needed, but it likely just needs a cleaning. If you have an ultrasonic cleaner, it makes quick work of the gunk with a little Simple Green. If not just soak in simple green and use a toothbrush. For the metal parts you can use brake cleaner, but don't use it on plastic; soak those parts in simple green. Soak the bearings in Ronsonol lighter fluid and then spin them on a pencil to dry. Use just one drop of oil on the bearings.

There are plenty of YT videos that will take you through the process. Take pictures with your phone as you break it down. You can consider upgrading the disc drags to carbon fiber. I find it relaxing to clean my reels every year.

I had a great guy in Richmond (David's Tackle Box) that I used for years -very reasonable.

After moving to College Station I started doing my own cleaning and some repair. Lots of YouTube videos available to help.

I get parts from DadOleTackle near Conroe. You can order online or call. They also do repair - you could UPS the reel to them.
