I entered a few times for my son and I this year. We see some huge exotics in there from time to time when running roads from Port Lavaca to Port O Connor. I don't have any tips but would love to know how you do. It looks very overgrown in most places, so you may need a flame thrower!
Class of '93 - proud Dad of a '22 grad and a '26 student!
We have been trying for a hunt on there for my son as well. We have a house that overlooks part of it and we always love seeing the pictures of what some of the kids kill on Texas bow hunters website. Would love to see pics of/when he gets something!
My 12 yo son got this Sambar there last year! Great experience! TPWD does a great job with this hunt!
FYI, they have great elevated rifle blinds in several spots, but your scent is exposed so take scent precautions. Also, have eyes on 360 degrees. the blind was set up in a certain direction, but there were several time we looked at the road behind us an had game crossing.
We saw both Sambar and whitetail but no axis. Good Luck!!!
Well, we weren't able to pull the trigger this weekend.
We walked the road and checked the water holes but nothing (no axis, sambar, wt) on our 1st walk through or showed at the stand Saturday or Sunday am. We found 3 hinds and calves Sunday about 10am but they were 500 yards away across water and passed. There were a bunch of sambar killed sat and Sunday morning.
They gave us 2 more compartments about 130. We were cruising the roads in the truck to get an idea of the area and there were 2 hinds standing in an opening. We drove up a ways and walked back and they were gone.
We saw a ducks, geese, sandhill crane, gator... but came back a little disappointed and coolers empty.
Fun trip though. I never regret time with the kids and outdoors.
