I had my eyes set on the 450 BM as an ultimate hog AR but have been reading a lot about cycling, ejection, and jamming issues that are common for this setup. Even certain magazines are problematic.

There is a great Facebook group specific to the 450 BM: https://www.facebook.com/groups/450Bushmaster with good commentary.

I was led to Tromix as a quality provider of 450 BM uppers and was about to make the plunge but Tony Rumore (owner of Tromix - the original manufacturer of the 458 SOCOM) was kind enough (on Christmas Eve) to respond to me that because of these problems, I may want to consider going to the 458 SOCOM.

Granted, he may be biased for the 458 SOCOM (though his company also makes the finest 450 BMs), would any of you have any experience between the two that would lean either way?

Again, my objective is pig hunting instead of home defense.

Here is what I have learned so far:

Pros of 450
-ammo (more available, better selections from big names like Hornady, a bit cheaper)
-SAMI certified - hence ammo
-shoots slightly flatter
-straight-walled casing (though I'm not planning on taking it out of state for hunting, it is good to know it is more accepted)

Cons of 450
-picky/stubborn (magazines, feeding, ejections, cycling) < this seems to be a deal breaker though many people have pushed through this making careful selections and sometimes needing to drill out the gas port and also change out the buffer spring.

It seems the SOCOM is more reliable, at the expense of ammo selection and ballistics (not as flat but close enough for most, yet the SOCOM also tends to beat out the BM for larger game if I ever used it for bigger things).

A popular article comparing the two are here

Any insight would be appreciated!

Sorry, I should have said "for me", but thanks for your kind insight.

Good topic. I'm interested as well.

Have you watched the YouTube channel Lone Star Boars? He's got an older video that he talks about each cartridge specifically for hog hunting and what applications each is best suited for.

I believe he said he likes 450 BM for thick brush. Awhile back he was really big on 6.8 SPC II.

I really like 6.5 Grendel but he hasn't said a whole about it.

His name Todd Huey of Huey Outdoors. He's got a thermal optics business.

no clue on the price per round of 450, but have you seen how much the 458 socom ammo is per round? yikes.

I like 450 more due to having a better selection of projectiles designed to expand at subsonic speeds.

Burdett & Son had plenty of 450 BM Hornady yesterday for I think about $1.60/rnd. Not too bad considering. Not sure about SOCOM and haven't seen it available (though wasn't looking). Of course local is a totally different market than online and Gunbroker.

that's a pretty good deal then for 450. back before this recent craze I was seeing 458 socom rounds going for $2-$3 a round, but I wasn't looking at budget places either so maybe it was cheaper somewhere else.

My initial thought as well or 308. If you want to nerd out I get it. Should be a fun journey.

My advice would be to build or buy something that has better ammo selection. Better ammo selection means cheaper to shoot and easier to find.

If you're dead set on straight wall i suggest 45-70

I just checked this out. Good resource and thanks for the rec!

Regarding the 50 Beowulf, I admit my ignorance but from what I read it seems it is edged out by the 450 and 458 except in very close range and that it's name and size are primarily what sells it.

Nice project but ouch! $5k would go a long way for mainstream arms. I bet that fella is a beast to handle. Nice looking though!
