Has this been discussed yet on the OB?

https://www.pigbrig.com/

Interesting concept but didn't see anything on the site for removing live pigs

looks low effort but would probably spend some time and money on hog panels.

Edit - FAQ addresses live capture -

Quote:

How do you load pigs from the Pig Brig Trap into a trailer?
You can back a trailer up to the trap as the T-post spacing is ~6 ft., the same width asmost trailers. You can then disconnect the seam to allow pigs to exit the trap. You need to add a cam strap at ground level to each T-post at the breached section to hold the net flush to the post. We are working on an attachment device.

Call me a puss, but I want some steel between me and 20-30 pissed off pigs. Netting ain't gonna cut it.

Once you have a trailer full of wild pigs, now what? I can't imagine you can just run it over and have them processed.

Is this for the tree huggers who want to "humanely relocate" pigs as opposed to just killing all of them?

There are plenty of places that buy wild hogs.

In their FAQ - they use the word "euthanize" and give advice...

Actually they have a lot of dead pigs on the website - the biologist who developed it said in an interview they came up with it on Guam - not many relocation options there other than someone's belly!

In the FAQ they mention it's safer to shoot pigs with their system

What is that netting made of?

I would be afraid that a determined pig could break free pretty easily if you have them enough time.

My only concern is with trap shy ("educated") hogs. Will they "work" at getting into the structure? It appears the pigs in those videos have never seen a trap before. There are certainly plenty of trap shy hogs in Texas!

We have trapped pigs for years. Some of our most successful traps being the typical corral traps - hog panels with a dropping gate or a head gate. We used to make them "rooter gates"- where pigs on the outside could root under and push their way in, but pigs already caught couldn't get out. But one day I watched a sow on the outside come in, hold the gate open with her back, and let every single pig run out on cue (like they had rehearsed it). She then backed out and all were free. Suddenly, all the empty traps with no corn started making sense. She got administered a lead Rx, but it wasn't long before another pig was doing the same thing. We shot 3-4 of them doing that, and others just kept learning the trick (from different sounders, in different places).

So, that's a cool concept, but I don't think it's going to take them long to realize when one pushes in that net, there is a hole for them to push out.

Also, I would not trust those t-posts and nets to hold a bunch of big pigs going crazy. I saw the video, and it looked like it was at least holding for the 10 second clip. But I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable around them that way for any length of time, trying to load them on a trailer (which I have done plenty of times).

Today I learned! I just assumed they wouldn't have been worth the trouble on the buyer's end.

Seems like it would be easy for a pig to tangled up in the net and then you either have to shoot it there or get in there and try to free it.

I don't know of anyone who would fit in that category. Most people I know who trap are those who realize you can't effectively reduce hog numbers by shooting them. They want to trap whole sounders at a time, and get rid of them. There are some places willing to pay for those pigs, and some programs where they can help feed hungry people- so that helps recoup at least a little of the cost of trapping.

In any case, those pigs die.

There are a few options once you trap and kill them. Relocating them just makes them someone else's problem. Steel traps work fine in our area, we don't have a lot of hog but in a week we trapped 11. I have a friend in east Texas that traps 30+ a week

Kill and leave them (or take them to another area) for vultures and coyotes
Take them to the water and if you have gators in the area watch some cool stuff
Eat the smaller ones
Find someone local that will eat them no matter what (what we try to do but sometimes they have too many already)

Anyone have a "Pig Brig" system they want to rent?
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

Not that I would ever take a pig there, but the Kerr county location is on FM 1340 and so is my place.

I agree with the poster above that said I wouldn't want a bunch of pissed off, scared pigs with only a net between us.

Being in Kerr county no t-posts are going in the ground without maximum effort and machinery.

Keep in mind in Texas, it is effectively illegal to relocate feral hogs. There are some odd exceptions (male only going to a hunting preserve with a hog resistant fence).

My thoughts on this rig...

1. From what I read, the intent is to not leave the pigs in the trap more than 24 hours, so you'd need a camera to watch it if you can't check it regularly in person

1.a. They sell more "stuff" and make recommendations to reinforce it if there's a chance to keep pigs in it more than 24 hours (like $2,200 version vs $1,500 version)

2. I think this beats using dogs if you really want to make a dent in the population or are worried about pressuring deer during hunting season etc

3. I think for the cost and time to implement its a better solution than $3500 for the triggered door traps. But I don't think I'd spend the money either way unless I had a Commerical need to have one

I've had guys offer to catch pigs with dogs on our place to sell for hunts elsewhere and offer me nothing in return - if I could sell what I caught conveniently I'd consider this over other alternatives

Just my 2 cents
Shoefly!

New law in Texas due to carcass dumping. You cannot dump carcass in any waterway.

It's unsettling because it 'moves'. It's not like cattle panel. However, I use netting like this (discarded from a golf course) for fencing and I can damn near guarantee ain't no pig getting out of it.

That said, it pretty much completely relies on that net folding IN so that they are standing on it while trying to escape. If for any reason that net folds out, then .... hell hath no fury....like a frightened pig.

It seems the same thing could be made much cheaper with a trampoline safety net and some t-posts.

This trap or the C style doesn't work if you can't drive in a t-post.
