I'm looking for a medium weight barn coat / field coat / hunting coat for working outside in the winter, sitting in a deer blind and occasionally hunting quail or jumping ducks on tanks. Plan to use it in central Texas so it doesn't need to be really heavy, but still keep me warm for the mornings below 40 degrees in the wind. Also would like it to look nice enough that I can wear it going out to dinner occasionally. I've checked out the ads on LL Bean, Cabela's, Orvis, etc and the reviews are all over the place. I'm ok spending a couple hundred but don't want to break the bank. Any recommendations are appreciated,

I love jackets because I hate long sleeve shirts and travels alot. One of my all around favorites is an Under Armor Storm with a zip out fleece. Its wind and water resistant. The fleece gives it a lot of flexibility.

Also, consider a Carhart or Duluth fire house jacket in whatever style you prefer. Or, a Duluth Shoreman fleece.

I have a few that meet your criteria. Two are Orvis, a couple Carhartts and a Gameguard. My favorite for what you described would be the Orvis Field Coat, the one I wear the most would be the Orvis Barn Coat. The Orvis Field Coat is my favorite because it has hand pockets that are comfortable but it is a little heavy by comparison to the barn coat which is why I wear it more. If you are going to really be doing a lot of work like changing oil, running a chainsaw or working calves then maybe a Carhartt might be the way to go but they are a lot stiffer and not as comfortable IMO.

ETA: I prefer a zipper with buttons to a button only which is also why I prefer the Orvis over one of my Carhartts.

Cant go wrong with ll bean products, i have lots of their stuff and it has all held up well. Also have carhartts and a duluth fleece, both work well but dont look quite as nice.

Ive got an L L Bean and a Carhartt. The Carhartt gets the nod but it is heavier than the other. As AnSc touched on above, neither has functional pockets for your hands.

I bought a Simms Windstopper shell jacket off Sierra or one of the other clearance sites. It's lightweight, but warm, and looks nice enough I wear it quite a bit.

I've got a couple of those. Really nice jackets. Simms is the best for fishing. Sitka for hunting.

I have Filson, LLBean and Carhartt. The Filson is my clear favorite but the tin takes forever to break in and you can't wash it. The wool is super thick and crazy warm. The pants and chaps have each stopped a chainsaw from cutting my leg and I have pics. The leather belt could tow my trailer and the hats are the best. The fly fishing vests are phenomenal.

The Carhartt is Filson lite...you certainly can stomp through *****ers but I doubt they would stop a chainsaw. I know they have trouble with locus spikes. I have an awesome coat I love called the canyon coat. It is my casual going out coat. I do not get it dirty.

The Bean barncoat is soft, warm , and looks good. I literally use it every morning in the barn. I have it in green but yellow looks good as well. Mine is wool lined.

I have a Simms jacket and best in the same material. I am continually amazed by how warm it is, for such a thing layer.. for more dirty work, I have a Carhartt that is so warm I don't wear it much in Central Texas.

I've really enjoyed my carhartt quick duck, i really like the pockets on it. Haven't worn it in a serious rain but it's fared well in small showers.

I like my Carhartt stuff, works well when it gets colder (cold for central Texas anyways) and I think it looks fine to wear out, I'll even wear it to Sunday church sometimes. One of them is the Bankston Jacket in dark brown, cant remember what the other style is called but its in their traditional light brown color.
