just curious if anyone here has fished the Paluxy west of where it enters Dinosaur Valley State Park? I've fished it in the park and down below Big Rocks Park in Glen Rose but never north of DVSP near the low water crossing on CR 1008. Planning on taking my father in law who is visiting from CA and my 2 boys tomorrow morning but wanted to see if anyone has had any luck fishing that stretch. I've seen some guys fly fishing there before(we won't be fly fishing). The deeper area above the crossing looks pretty promising.

Yup. Lots. It's hit or miss depending on water flow and numbers of locals floating around. It's best this time of year and mid spring. Lots of beautiful sunfish and bass and the occasional catfish or carp floating by. But more than anything it's just a great river to walk and enjoy the scenery.

There's a couple of deep holes though so check your footing. And the area north of 1008 looks great, but is mostly too deep to wade. I also like getting in at the park and working my way up river. Have fun!

Thanks. I have a 2 person inflatable kayak I'm bringing to hit the area north of 1008.

The deep side of that low water crossing would be great for the kayak ... I've never done that but it looks promising. My guess is that it will shallow out pretty quickly. If you drive further up you'll get to a spot where the road gets real close to the river and there is a place to park -- you are 20' above the rive. I always see fish in there but they are always spooked bc it's so easy to get to and somebody has probably already fished it. But, if you put in there, you probably have a good stretch to float with some porting. I've walked way back up river from there and always had luck. It's a little mucky there at the start so kids and in law need to be careful. If you want to teach the kids to fly fish this is a great spot to do that. Lot's of willing pan fish and an occasional river bass.

Pictures from there earlier this year.

awesome pics thanks for sharing. I may just have to get some fly fishing gear soon to try out down there.

Looking at the satellite images, the stretch north of 2008 looks like it is pretty deep for a good 1/4 mile or more upstream. Much deeper than anything looks downstream from there from what I can tell. I probably driven through this stretch a half dozen times in the past year just never stopped to get out and check it out.

Tarpon ... that is new to the collection and I really enjoyed using it! Do you have any of the salt glass echo rods?

Those bass kinda look like Guads.

Don't think there are Guads in the Paluxy River system, though.

But the green sunfish, they are everywhere.

I've got a first gen 9' 8wt BAG. It is fun to fish but you really notice the swing weight. The new ones are supposed to be better

I call them River Bass ... not sure but kinda think they may be Guadalupe ... they dont seem like black bass.

I do not. But I hear good things about the Echo glass lineup. I only have a 3 modern glass rods, Cabelas CGR in 7wt and 3wt, and an Eagle Claw Featherlight (this is tremendously underrated as a small water rod for only $20 and perfect for teaching my kids). The rest of my glass is all vintage. I have a couple Fenwick (FF79 & FF98), a 7wt Shakespeare Wonder Rod, plus I have 3 Scientific Angler combos (System 5, System 7, and System 11- these are built on Fisher blanks which are awesome and have re-badge Hardy Marquis reels matched to the rod).

Shazam! Have you thought about GLASSMAN as new user name!

I think you are on to something with the glass and teaching ... the extra bend can be felt.
Most rods are so stiff it's hard for beginners to feel the rod loading on the back cast.

Haha- my graphite quiver is even bigger and gets used more.

Let's see if I can think of them all without going upstairs and counting
- Echo 4wt (I forget which of the lineup it is) w/ Lamson reel (Guru maybe?
- LL Bean Guide 5wt (this rod was OEM by G. Loomis and is an outstanding rod) w/ Orvis Battenkill
- 6wt custom made by my BiL on a CF Burkheimer Saltwater blank w/ Tibor Backcountry CL Wide
- 6wt Allen (forget the model, got it for like $50) w/ Allen Trout II
- 8wt Scott S3S w/ Orvis Battenkill Mid-Arbor
- 8wt Scott Tidal w/ Hatch 7+
- 8wt Hardy ProAxisX w/ Tibor Everglades
- 8wt Echo Beach Boost (2 hander) w/ 3-Tand T70
- 10wt Scott Tidal w/ Tibor Riptide
- 10wt TFO Mangrove w/ 3-Tand T90
- 10wt Echo Ion XL w/ Colton Terrapin
- 12wt Hardy ProAxis w/ Tibor Gulfstream
- 12wt Orvis Hydros w/ Orvis Battenkill Large Arbor
- 14wt TFO Bluewater w/ Allen Kraken

I like your style T-Chaser!

Why change out a spool when you can put on the perfect reel

Fishing report- 4 people fishing for 3 hours and we didn't catch anything. Ok the kids probably ended up just playing in the water for an hour or so after not catching anything. Oh and I left my paddle at home so we lashed the rudder to a branch and had to use that instead. Didnt work very well but we had fun.

Warning- that low water crossing is slick as snot and dangerous if you are on a motorcycle. Around 9:30 my son and I came back from fishing down river and I was standing by the road when a group of about 6 motorcycles came around the corner. They waited for a car to cross them went down the hill and across. The first one got about halfway across and wiped out. The one behind it tried to stop but also wiped out and slid into the first one. The rest stopped but another of the bikes slipped and fell over too. After a while they were all able to start back up and started moving again and the first bike fell again along with 2 more in the back fell. Nobody got hurt but the first bike was damaged and they couldnt ride it anymore.

Pho what were you fishing with and how were you fishing it? Been there many times and dont think ive ever been shut out (loud knock on wood). I am fishing a fly rod with poppers mainly... occasionally ill drop something shiny off the popper ... also, had luck with a deer hair frog. Work the banks, tree shadows and crevasses along the bank. In deeper water id throw around rocks in the middle.

Went fishing on the Paluxy this morning. Didn't get started until about 8:30 (thanks cleburne whataburger...)

Caught a couple bluegill and a bass broke off. Plenty of bass in there, just couldn't match the right fly. Still learning a lot about fly fishing and it was an enjoyable morning in the water.

They don't look like the quads in the south llano river. Next time you catch one check the teeth on the tongue, guads have a lot, LMB few. Color on a fish can fool you.

Doing a little research there is an all-tackle of record of 1.23 # for Spotted Bass in Paluxy River. Notice, as in Guadalupe Bass, the dark spot in each of the belly scales.

Those are Spotted Bass in the Paluxy.
