We are starting to think about retirement and looking for a lake house w a view. No clue where to start as all our vacations have been mostly gulf coast related. We love water views, not so much in boating, fishing etc. We are hesitant to buy on the gulf coast because the hurricanes seem to be increasing in frequency, plus the high cost of insurance. Any thoughts on lake front living , suggestions, comments are welcome. TIA

Hurricanes come and go. Sometimes you go 20 years without one and then sometimes you have two in three years. The cost of windstorm, flood, and regular insurance is real though. I'd probably be looking more at lake property if I wanted to be on the water.

There are a lot of lakes in Texas, is there any particular region or metropolitan area you'd like to live near? Personally, I like the view of the Dillon Reservoir in Dillon Colorado.

I would start with the Texas Highland Lake chain. Amistad is a hidden gem if you don't mind being out in the middle of nowhere.

Lake Limestone will get you close to Aggieland.
Trump will fix it.

I'd start by pinpointing where you want to be close to. A&M for sports? Grandkids in certain cities? Airports for travel? Occasional work commitments even after retirement?

Without any of the other info, I'd agree with the above. I'd ditch Texas for Colorado

Inks is a nice quiet lake. Pretty Hill Country views and is a constant level lake so no drought fears.

Lake Tahoe would be the best view. Especially if money is no object.

Canyon lake is nice if you're looking more for a view and less about actually being on the water. The treks down to the water can be a workout but being up on the cliffs provides for a heck of a view.

As above, many lakes on the lower Colorado River chain have great views, especially Inks, Travis and Marble Falls.

Possum Kingdom is in the top list of lake views. Granbury is a good one too.

Definitely consider constant level, near constant level, and full fluctuation types of lakes. Many lakes in Texas can very dramatically with drought, while LBJ and others stays within inches no matter upstream/downstream conditions.

ETA: If no ties to Texas, Ozarks in Arkansas have Great Lakes. Hell, even Idaho and Michigan have top notch lakes.

The Guadalupe River has some nice river residences. I have a few friends with retirement homes just south of Canyon lake and also between New Braunfels/IH35/Lake McQueeney and Seguin/IH10.

My folks live on LBJ. Constant level until you have a 1000 year flood. Since they live there and I am in Austin, we were able to secure everything and the neighbors stuff when they got hit. It was nuts watching millions of dollars in toys floating around aimlessly.

Having said all that, they love it. They are close to good medical care and the grandkids. One possible issue with LBJ is going to be cost. Not sure what your financial situation is, but waterfront on LBJ is quite spendy. Lake Travis is another option on the Northeast side in a deep water cove. It's a beautiful lake and much quieter and more affordable on that side. If you get on the West side, the prices go way up.

I spent some time at lake Bridgeport this summer and I'm suprised it doesn't get more attention. Defiantly a lake near DFW worth checking out

Lake Amistad is awesome, but remember that it is a National Park. Which means no boat house/personal dock and pulling your boat out of the water every day you go out. So keep that in mind.

It's about accurate as "science" these days. They use "data" to show whatever they need for more funding.

Science has lots of theories and hypothesis. And they change regularly. Hell, so does medicine. I mean they can't predict the weather accurately tomorrow, but they've got climate change nailed this time. Ignore the constant warming and cooling patterns for millennium based on theirown data. This time the world is ending because of humans that didn't exist the last 10 times it warmed or cooled.

They literally didn't know hurricanes were coming in WW2 just 60 years ago. We practically lost an entire task force because of it. How they hell can you say they happen more when they didn't even know they were happening last century unless they wiped out a city.

Come on man. We have a better idea how stuff works on a macro level today then before, but they don't "know" near what they like pretend they do when it gets to the details.

Isn't McQueeney a **** show now considering the future of the dam?

I recall a few years ago seeing an Amistad boat house for sale on here. What's up with that?

can be for sure. Dunlap will have a waterfront tax levied on it to pay to rebuild the dam.

I would do three things
1-decide what you want to be close to-airport for travel, city for shopping, restaurants, health care, etc.
2-size of property-house with lot or a couple acres
3-make sure the lake consistently has water.

I think they might have been selling a houseboat. There are passes/permits you can have to have houseboats at Rough Canyon. They did away with the rental houseboats as far as I know, and can only be privately owned on the lake now.

For lake property, (depending on the lake) there can often be a massive delta in price point between lake front lot and lot across the street. Like others mentioned, if you want to be in Texas, the canyon lake area provides some good views for non lakefront lots. Good luck!

Lake Leon or Lake Cisco in Eastland County. Gets you away from the cities with the ability to quickly access the interstate to get to Abilene or Ft Worth for needed medical care.
