Moose Hunting ... hardest country I have ever beat-brush in. It's the only place I can think of where God took all the canopy from overhead and put it under your feet. Probably the most difficult and rewarding hunt of my life. Getting the meat out in itself is a story. Had ice on the tent/ground four of the days...waders and boots frozen; had to dunk them in the lake to thaw them before putting them on.

Went for moose. Saw only 2; one was about 1500 yds away. This one we spotted at about 800 yards and called it into about 260 yds. Had to go ahead and take the shot as it was getting low light; but it would have likely crossed the river and come closer. Also had a bear coming in about 500 yards to the South at the same time; saw it first at about 1200 yds. We set up to take the bear; It got to about 100 yds from our tracks and did a 180 and into the tree line. So we focused on calling this guy in. We knew he was big; but didn't know he was this big.

Had a bear come into camp one night and ate a can of motor oil for our raft. We paddled across the bay for the balance of the trip when the river was too high. Had to dodge bears tracking this guy. Once we got the moose butchered and meat out (took 2 full days to get all of it the 1 mile from where I shot it to the lake/plane the rear quarters weighed about 150 pounds each; it stood about 82" at the shoulders); the weather came in and we are looking at 7 days of rain and high winds. We had to strike camp and get out before the weather set in.

Shot with .375 H&H, Barnes 300 grain on a Blaser R8. Was able to get three in him. 1st one behind shoulder in upper chest. Lots of blood and was what brought him down I assume, 2nd hit him lower mid body, rear 1/3, after he turned; last one in the neck as he moved away. All three wounds were clear as we butchered him.

Moose calling/hunting is about as fun as it gets (at least for me). Typically beautiful country, challenging hunting, and just a majestic animal. Their size is jaw dropping. Congrats on your bull!

Fun fact, in winter moose (as dumb as they are) realize it's easier to walk on a plowed road than wade through 4' of standing snow. Car comes around the corner and hits it. Unlike hitting a deer, a car's hood will take out the legs and then the body of the moose will slide up the hood and into the passenger compartment. You killed the moose, and the moose kills you.
