Family Deer Blind Build

Been working on this is recent weeks. I kicked around all spring and summer trying to figure out a way to get a blind set up that would be big enough for the family, without spending the $8000 that they want for a large pre-built blind.

Requirements were-

1. Big enough for the whole family and have room to store some minor conveniences.
2. Affordable.
3. Last longer than the usual rotten in three years wooden blind.
4. Be high enough off the ground to actually help.
5. Have stairs rather than a ladder so my dad, young kids, or others with minor disabilities could get in and out safely.
6. Be open enough for people to actually still feel like they are outdoors and experience nature. Whats the point of going hunting if you're sealed inside a capsule with a little hole to peak out of.

Rather than build the usual dimensional treated timber base with a box that sits on top of it, I decided to go with used telephone poles set deep that would extend to the roof. This would create a rock solid base and make it more wind resistant as a whole. It took some digging to figure out where to get the polls but by far the easiest way to do it is find a place where they are doing work and the crews are happy to let you have the old ones so they dont have to haul them off. The best part is they are for free!

Bye bye popup blind.

I prebuilt the main floor on the ground. All lumber is treated. Two 5/8" sheets of plywood so 8X8 floor space. Used the skid steer to ratchet it up in to place by alternating sides being raised and using temp supports to hold in place.

With the platform set to 11ft, it was time to install the stripper stairs. Not bad for a $200 craigslist find. The landing will allow the door to open outward to save space.

Framing to support the lower walls. Siding is recycled cedar fence pickets (for free). Tinted flip up windows all the way around set a little low to 36.5" so kids can see and shoot. Purchased from ultramatic feeders on 290. They keep a large stock so no 4-8 week wait like some of the other companies.

ScentWrap by Dupont between the interior and exterior walls.

Exterior walls on. Pops helped some but he was instrumental in testing the suitability of the trash pile, move out day (for free) blind chairs.

Next was the framing for the upper walls and then the roof. Everything so far has been set on the inside of the polls at 8x8. The roof is 10x12 and set on the outside of the poles to give a nice overhang. Roof is galvalume R-panel from Hilco metal just south of Navasota. Ive used them for a couple projects and been really happy. Only $74 for four 12ft sheets. The junk at lowes would have been way more.

View to one of the feeders.

That's where she sits currently. Hope to finish the roof and walls tomorrow then give an update on some conveniences. Ive got one buck that has shed velvet but the rest are still grouped up. Trying to get wrapped up and out of the woods before they start trying to set their territories.

I have been kicking around a similar idea since we found out my wife is pregnant. She usually hunts with me every hunt all season.....but 3 of us won't fit in our current deer stands. It's crazy how similar my thoughts were and are to your project...but we have way too much rock where I want to place a stand to make drilling holes easy. Good work!

I am concerned about the stairs being of that shape. I can't imagine being layered in clothing carrying a back pack and a rifle with two inches of mud on my boots and then try to navigate those stairs in the dark...

Apparently you aren't doing this correctly, some days the slowest hunting days are the best days.

That's not deer hunting.....that's harvesting a corn fed animal.

I can do the same from the front porch. The house has ac, a fridge, tv, and a recliner!

Looks awesome!!! How do you like that kubota loader?? I'm torn between a typical tractor with a bucket or a track loader just like that. What are your typical uses?

It will! That's a monster. All outdoors (even semi) is great imo.

Batteries, solar charger, heat and A/C(depending on day) and a wet bar. That should finish it out!

Edit: and a fire pole for quick exits!

Looks great! My only suggestion would be to get some heavy duty adhesive backed grip tape for those stairs. They're gonna be slick as **** when wet or muddy.

Good idea. I'd take it one step forward and add grit to some paint and paint the steps with non skid paint. Much more durable than the tape

GentrysMill, Ive hauled a bunch of stuff up them. You kind of learn to lean in to one side. They are tight enough that it would be kind of hard to go far.

Bottlerocket, I borrowed it from my brother. Put about 60 hours on it in a week and got a crazy amount of work done. Built about 300 yards of road, leveled old road, prepped a levee to get it ready for a dozer, installed overflow pipes on a levee, cleared shooting lanes, drilled holes for this winters tree plantings, etc. I had kicked around the idea of buying a used one, using it for a bit, and then selling it once I was done with my projects. Unless your available time to use it is limited evenings and weekends, I think most people would be better to just rent for a week or month when you have a list built up. Might also be worth buying if you had a bunch of brush to clear. I really liked it but itll rattle your teeth out. Told my brother I was going to get "The Zipper" airbrushed on the side before I brought it back. Reminded me of being on the old county fair carnival ride, The Zipper. Whiplash if you dont watch out.

Aftershock, Yeah, I really hope I dont lose my lease this summer. I kid! Hopefully, if I sell the place, the new owners will appreciate it. Its at ground zero for deer activity. Lots of trails already in the area and right where the previous owner hunted for a number of years. I would have liked to set it 100 yards closer to my neighbor but didnt want it overlooking them. As it is, I think they might be able to see it when the leaves drop but its way too thick for us to shoot their direction.

Bregxit, thanks for the thought. I hadnt even considered it. Just ordered some 6" wide tape. There's diamond plate on the steps but they could use some help.

Got the roof and exterior upper walls on. Added some X-braces to knock out any shaking.

I dont know if it was the cooler weather or rain but the pile of fence pickets was INFESTED with the little bastages. Mashed about 30-40. Going to nuke them Monday.

View to the other two feeders. There will be a gun rest shelf and I'm thinking maybe a little more tint on the windows depending on how it looks once the inside is closed up.

Got it wrapped up today. Been one heck of a project!

Finishing up the inner walls and heavy duty upper shelf added to store the big stuff up off the ground.

Framed the door out of 2x2 cedar to keep it light weight.

Finished door and hung coat hooks.

Shooting shelfs around with corner shelfs to have a place for drinks, phones, etc.

Room for 20lb propane, heater, single burner stove, extra chairs, etc. Also added V notches in the shooting shelfs to rest your gun barrel.

May be the worlds first ever camo lightning rod. Small investment to help protect against it burning down in a storm. If you ever need to set up a lightning rod system give Jim a call. He will walk you through the engineering and setup. http://www.lightningrodsupply.com/index_files/page0001.htm

Wrapped the outside in camo net. Kinda polishing a turd when it comes to hiding something of this size but it does give it some depth and break things up a little. Its not the quality of the old US military stuff but it's supposed to last pretty well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PSVYNE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

View of the back. Need to grab a few more pics from the feeders shooting back at the blind.

Only thing left is adding a solar setup for lights, fans, etc but Im thinking that may have to wait til after season.

All you need to do is rent a spray foam applicator and seal those walls. It will help keep the buts out, and you could hunt in your shorts in January.

Keeping bugs out is a prime concern for me from here on out. I came in last in the annual recluse roundup and have some new holes in my arm.

I probably need to leave some cracks for ventilation for the heater. I did spray it down with Bifen I/T and will probably hit it every few months. The scorpions went from things of a bad dream to not a one. I assume it's probably good for spiders too.

One of the damn things carrying babies on it's back after getting the hose.
