Parents are kicking around the idea of getting a place in Sargent. Their idea is to find a plot hopefully along the gulf where they can put a RV pad instead of a house. They would probably have to call a realtor down there but since Outdoor folks know stuff, I figured I'd just check. Also curious how much does running electricity, installing septic and water would run? TIA

I don't own but in-laws do and spend a lot of time down there.

I like the idea and have thought about something similar. Anyone know how the RV will hold up to salty air?

Haul it in and out every time. In-laws had a home down there. I spent a full day doing repairs every time I went, and it wasn't an old run down house.

I have a family member that lives right on the water in an travel trailer full time. Holds up fine, they bought a "used" trailer and other than a small roof leak it's been fine. They have been there 3 years now.

Parked at a "destination" RV park. Pool, laundry mat, kayak and boat launch, and private entry. Even has high speed internet. I would say 1/2 the folks are full time or long term stays.

It would depend on how often they're down there.

Is it full time or every weekend? Keeping it down full time won't be an issue and you'll be able to catch things as they occur, etc. If you won't be down as often, it will be a pain for it to be down there full time because there's a chance you'll get down and have an issue here or an issue there, then your time and weekend is gone. Especially if you can get supplies nearby so you have to drive out somewhere.

From a logistics standpoint, I'd seriously dislike having to take it there and back everything and doesnt sound like that's what you had in mind.

I spent a fair bit of time down there at a buddys place. He had a travel trailer and it held up just fine. It was on a concrete pad and the only times he moved it were for storms. I think he had it for 10 years or so. It was really starting to show some age, but he bought it used, so it had a great run. Buy a used one, leave it there and just buy another one when the first gets too run down. You can buy a bunch of pretty nice travel trailers for the price of a small house on stilts.

Yeah, I've thought the same about buying those trailers and understanding they have a limited shelf life. Quite frankly I've been surprised by how cheap some 5th wheels are(pre Covid).

You will get out of paying windstorm insurance.

Yep, build trailer hookups, and a covered shelter for it. WAY cheaper than building and insuring a weekend place. With proper maintenance it will last just fine.

I worked for a construction company for 6 years. A lot of the people that worked for us lived in travel trailers going from job to job. One common problem was leaking roofs. They would say the sun bakes the rubber roofs and causes it to crack. I've seen where people build an elevated deck over their travel trailer pad. Gives you a nice place to hang out and provides cover to your travel trailer.

My parents are looking into buying in surfside and have been multiple times to meet with renters and realtors. Lots of questions and worried about up keep since they won't live down there.

Any recommendations on who builds the covers?

Build a seperate shower / bathroom facility if you go this route. I wouldn't want the family trying to shower in an RV after swimming in the creek. And if you've ever spent time in an RV and only had that little bathroom you'll understand why.
