How long do you want to ignore this user?
bought an Athlon 20-60 x 80mm...decent but the clarity is just not there when you get to 60x and over 100-yards.

Wasn't expecting miracles but I wanted to give it a shot b/c it has a lot of decent reviews and it was on sale at Scheels for $129.99 (normal $149.99).

So if you had $400 to spend, what spotting scope would you buy ?

whats your goal with it? just to see bullet at holes on targets? If so I would upgrade your rifle scope

In my experience, spotting scopes at that price point aren't really all that useful at anything above 40x. I wouldn't get a 20-60x. I'd go for something like a 15-45x.

I know it's over your budget (would the texags ob be the texags ob if the recommendations aren't over your budget?). Probably this one as it gets really decent reviews and comes with a tripod -

Either a Kowa TSN-501 20-40x50, or a Leupold Gold Ring 15-30x50. Because no $400 spotter will be any good at or close to 60x, and because 50mm is a really handy size.

In your situation however, I would wait and save up a bit more, use what you already have at a more reasonable 20x-35x, and buy something that is a substantially better like a Leupold Pro Guide, or Kowa 65mm, or Pentax PF-65 w/fixed XW eyepiece, or a Vortex Razor. IMO going to a $400 80mm scope over what you already have is not worth the effort.

YMMV of course.....

To Caladan: what would be your counsel between the Vortex Diamondback 20-60X80 And the Leupold Gold Ring 15-30X50 for use primarily on the range at 100 yds and occasionally out to 200 yds?
