Academy on I-10 in Houston's Memorial area can't keep guns in stock.

Went by Academy in the Memorial area today to buy a shirt for my son and saw that the gun department was about 70% empty shelves. I thought they must be shutting down the department as a cave to PC pressure. The salesman said that they were NOT closing the department - they just can't keep anything in stock. A shipment comes in and promptly gets cleaned out. This tells me that either idiotic tulip-bulb style hoarding is going on again, or all kinds of new people are suddenly buying their first firearms (or some of both).

As I mentioned on a prior thread, I stocked up during the Obama years, so I don't do much gun or ammo buying these days. This is starting to become a little worrisome, because I have to think most of the good guys have been stocked-up a long time ago. Are these leftist weenies suddenly buying their first firearms?

Every Academy looks like that right now.

And it's not just guns and ammo. Also fishing, camping, workout equipment, above ground pools... Shipments come in to the store, and they are gone almost immediately.

Wow, would love to buy some more ammo. Guess that's not gonna happen for a while.

Saw an article that said gun sales were up 500%. You've got a pandemic that led to hoarding, riots, defunding the police talk and the threat of a presidential election resulting in anti-gun legislation on the horizon.

I ordered a bunch from Fenix.

It's back ordered, but it'll come when it comes.

You're right. We went to the Academy in Fort Worth on Saturday. Guns were almost all gone; a few long-barrel shotguns and bolt guns were in stock, and a G26 (odd, but whatever).

Only two kayaks.

Handful of kids bikes. No adult bikes. 95% gone overall.

I have a few of my wife's friends that are starting to ask about gun ownership. They'll be 1st time gun owners here soon. This isn't a carbon copy of Obamaesque buying.

...what a time to be alive

Kinda ready for this phase to be over...but cautiously dreading what the future might look like.

I kind of felt like academy has been on a decline for a couple of years now. I did stop in one to take a whizz a few weeks ago and noticed the same thing. Things aren't priced that great and even sales and close outs are kinda steep. I needed some trot line and all manner of hardware to go with and realized I could buy 10x the amount for way less on amazon and it would show up to my door.

Is academy having trouble or is it just a byproduct of half the people being terrified and the other half just not shopping ?

Academy isn't having trouble I don't believe. Well except that they can't restock. I'm not 100% sure, but I think its a little bit of several things. A lot of things are made in china and getting things from there has been slowed by covid. People are spending more time doing outdoor activities so they're buying more outdoor gear. Probably some other things too.

There's a huge difference in a firearm owner and firearm user...get training and shoot well...

Probably not in great quantity for awhile. Primers are largely manufactured overseas and CCI/Federal was back ordered on fulfilling ammo requests/orders until like November. I spoke to a reloading distributor back in June and asked about small pistol primers and got the "you and everyone else" type of response. Considering the effect that Covid has on Europe, that supply line of primers will probably take awhile to catch back up. CCI/Federal aren't the only primers company around, but they're pretty good for commercial manufacture because they're not stupidly hard or soft.

I just purchased my first handgun and they are hard to come by everywhere. All of the stores I looked at were low on stock and I ended up having to order what I wanted.

At a recent gathering of my wife's family (Mostly leftist weenies) two of my brother in laws who have never thought about buying a gun started asking my opinion on what they should buy.
I was shocked. Not sure if this is a good thing or not.
They are both PHD's but they are not smart enough to understand their politics are what has put them in the position of needing a gun to protect their families.

This. Guessing OP hasn't been in an academy since early March.

Many people living in large urban areas are learning that the local governments are more interested in being woke than protecting life or property.

Correct. I knew there was another gun/ammo panic but I had not been to Academy in a long time. On a related note, Bass Pro in Katy seemed to have plenty of firearms but looked low on ammo the last time I went there (about 2-3 weeks back).

That's because if you go in bass pro to buy a gun, you stand there for an hour waiting for someone to help you, then get pissed off and tired of waiting and go buy it at Academy for 20% cheaper...

Since I live about 1.5 miles from the Katy Bass Pro I go there all then time. They are also low on firearms and normal ammo is non-existent. To me Academy has been on the slide since they were purchased buy some out of state corporation. The "help" in the guns and fishing department are not knowledgeable and not friendly.

The Academy at White Settlement and in Weatherford are pretty much cleaned out everytime I go there. They do get ammo it, but have a strict three box limit on the popular calibers.

Went into the Academy in Arlington yesterday, and most of the areas I like were pretty well wiped out.

I was in 2 Academy stores near The Colony this weekend and it was the same. They had very few guns in the gun department beyond some really oddball stuff.

What I don't understand is where all this disposable income is coming from. People are supposed to be hurting and needing another stimulus payment yet people are buying things up like crazy. Are people living on credit, blowing stimulus money, or just killing it at work?
Aggieangler93
How long do you want to ignore this user?
All the above, I guess.

I took some guns that I no longer shot much, and sold them with people looking for more guns now. I was able to turn around and buy models I preferred.

I think all the gun hysteria is all in response to the idiots wanting to defund police. Any sane person that hears that, wants to roll out and get some guns so that they have something to help themselves out with, if they become the front line of defense for their family.

In my situation, I have plenty of guns. I always wanted my CHL for times when I travel, moreso than for everyday safety. All the lunacy going on prompted me to get up off my butt finally, and go get it.

People laid off are getting $600 extra per week. This Ends in July.

So a $15/ hour employee is getting 600$ from unemployment ( full benefits right now) plus 600$ extra. Double their salary.

It's a big problem. People won't go back to work. It ends in July and won't be renewed I don't believe.

Anyway, it's been good for retail business and that's one reason so many items are sold out.
