Any recommendations on a dealer within an hour of BCS? Probably looking at a 5x10 or 6x10 single axle option.

Get a 6 x 10. You'll thank me later. there are lots of things which just won't fit on a 5 foot wide trailer.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Since this the OB and you did not ask... consider getting a tandem axle and one with a bulldog hitch.

I agree with the larger one.

Try JM Trailers on HW 21 as you head west out of Bryan. A couple miles past the John Deere dealership, but before you get to knife river.

They have a pretty decent selection and are good to work with, my in-laws have bought trailers from them before and been pleased with the product.

The other thing you are going to realize is that going to 12-14 foot will only add a small amount to the overall cost of the trailer. Typically a couple hundred bucks so unless you just don't have the space it's something to consider.

Phil's trailer in Waco, you won't find cheaper prices and they have everything under the sun.

The place does a crazy amount of business so don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit to get a phone answered. It's a whirlwind there and you'll see it when you go to pickup your trailer.

One thing I have learned about trailers is if you have a chance to go bigger do it!! You won't regret it and can always use the extra space.

this too, a dual axle trailer will tow much smoother and you won't have to explain "that sound" of a single axle jumping around everytime you slow down or rollover something in the road.

I only see 2 options for utility trailers, a tandem 16' and 18'.

We bought a Ranch King a few years back. When I shopped around Houston for a 6x10 with a ramp it was one of the better prices I could find. There are a few dealers around Houston and I think the main location is up around Bellville. Might be a dealer in BCS area.

We ended up with a single, agreed with others a double is the way to go for future growth.

I have a Bigtex 35SA with a fold down ramp and love it. Mine is 6x12, but they make 6x10. The Bigtex Trailer World in north Houston should be about an hour away.

Not sure about the inventory but those prices are pretty good for what is in the picture compared to what I have priced in central Texas.

Waco has a ton of dealers at better prices than in BCS. Phils and Lonestar come to mind.

I went with a ranch king 14' with tandem axle and brakes because I tow a long ways. Have been very happy with it. As others have said at times I wish I had the 16' wouldn't have been very much more at the time.

I am not a fan of the built in ramp I went with the two ramps stored under the trailer. I think it makes it much more versatile. I usually have a lot of kids on the trailer around the neighborhood for the 4th and Halloween and makes it easier when I get rock or dirt with it.

It is a pain to setup ramps each time but not bad and makes up for it not being in the way sometimes.

These guys are good. I just bought a equipment hauler from them. Been very happy with the trailer

JM trailer is the best spot in BCS. I have a gently used Texas Bragg 5x10 foot I'd be willing to sell you. It's in great shape. Stored under a shed out of the elements. 2-3 years old.

Appreciate everyone's responses - lots of great feedback.

@dr_boogs - would be interested in talking a little more about your used option.

Texas trailer supply in spring or manor is 1050 for a 6x10 no gate. $200 for a gate.

Bump up to a 6x12 for 1095

Texas Pride trailers are built in Madisonville, and may be worth looking at. I don't know anything about them as far as quality but they are close.

As others have said, go as wide as possible. 83" inside width is the widest you can purchase. An 83" x 10' is a lot more useful than a 60" x 10'. You would be able to fit biggest zero turns and side by sides on it. As for length, get the longest you can easily maneuver and store around your house. Tandem-axle trailers are great, but also are more expensive to maintain and store. Also, look consider diamond plate flooring. May be more expensive up front, but would never need replacing in the future.

I would steer clear from Big Tex and would consider looking at Lamar, Diamond C, and Load Trail personally. Big Tex uses pretty light-weight materials compared to the ones I mentioned. Not all trailers are made equally.

We bought a 6x10 single axle brush trailer from Texas trailer supply In Spring back before Christmas. It seems well built and rode well carrying a Polaris UTV from College Station to Houston and Houston to San Antonio at 70-75 mph.

if you are getting a 10', go ahead and spend a few more dollars for a 12 foot trailer. Sheetrock, lumber, etc. are commonly sold in 12' pieces.

I picked up a 6x12 from them 2 yrs ago. First trip was CS to Las Cruces with 3 motorcycles, scaling about 2000lbs. It pulled perfectly fine at 85mph.

OB Board, need to be all learned up on trailers. Was looking at a 14ft utility but it doesn't come with brakes. Isn't that weird? Shouldn't surge brakes or even integrated brakes be necessary on a trailer like that?

Also, any experience with the Tophat brand of trailers? Any other brands you would recommend?

I've always considered brakes to be dependent on the loads I anticipate carrying. 5K gross or less, I don't think they are really necessary.

I'd be more concerned with the brand of axle and type of suspension.

Then, look at the tongue/frame.
My preference in order:

Wrap
Composite
A-frame
Straight

For a coupler, look for a bulldog/hammer blow style.

Pipe top build is going to be stiffer than angle top.
Channel frame is stiffer than angle.

All that said, the best prices I've seen are at Texas trailer supply. You can go Ranch King, TopHat, etc, but you will pay a premium. You need to weigh usage against cost.

I would think brakes at that length would be worth it.

Standard response of: tandem axle (first blow out you will wish you had them)/bull dog hitch/get as long as you can

I have a 16' Tophat - heavy duty pipe rails and have not had any issues. I made a few minor modifications based upon my needs (tongue box, moving spare, detachable trailer jack).

I bought a 5x10 (round tubing) with ramp from Trout Tire in Porter back in 2005. I drive by their place a lot and they appear to have turned into a trailer place primarily, so it may be worth it to give them a call to see what they have to offer. IIRC, I paid like $750 back then for it, which was way cheaper than the 4x8s I was finding at other places in Houston with angle iron.

Quick update - being told by at least five different dealers in the BCS area (including Phil's in Waco) that they're having a hard time keeping inventory on their lots and most are about 2-3 weeks out (minimum) from having available inventory. I guess folks need a means of carrying their stockpiles of TP and other necessities to survive the pandemic.

As a side note - any feedback on Stagecoach Trailers? Looks like they're all made here in Texas and a lot of really solid reviews online.
