Yard question Moles or Gophers?

Our yard is getting areas of soft ground where it feels like you could sink in. Kind of like there could be a tunnel underneath the surface. We figured the problem is either moles or gophers. But in reading up on them, we are not finding any mounds of dirt that fit the description of what moles and gophers produce. We live outside of Houston and have St. Augustine grass. Any ideas? If it is moles or gophers, do you have any recommendations for how to get rid of them?

I'm dealing with the same thing and posted here a couple of weeks ago about it. Let me find the old thread...

I've been fighting moles in my yard for 3 yrs and have yet to find a working solution... hell, I almost wonder if they don't have a whole set up under my house and migrate from the backyard to the front when I think I get a handle on a spot in the yard.

We've had the same problem in College Station....twice!

Got one of these traps and killed a mole the first night I had it set. The problem went away. A couple of years later we started having issues again with tracks and soft ground. It took almost a week but we snagged another one.

We also never found any mounds of dirt in our yard.

I've had the same issue in the past. I was told to "try the barn cat trick, if you don't want snakes, get a cat to kill the mice". In other words, kill their food source and they will go elsewhere. I have put out insecticide to kill the grubs and other bugs. The old guy at the feed store knew what he was talking about, because I haven't had a problem since.
