considering an AR 10 and would like opinions between the 2. My uncle swears on his 6.5 but all I have ever heard growing up is the .308 was the best round ever made.

while I have neither in an AR10 I have both in bolt action. If I am just going out to shoot some targets I am taking the 6.5. But when I go hunting I still tend to grab my 308. Just more of a personal choice.

I did just build an AR10 in 6mm Creedmoor and its a blast to shoot as well.

Only real advantage I can see to 308 is short range, bigger game. Like a 180+ grain elk round. For deer, its 6.5 all the way.

I think it totally depends on your application.

I love my 6.5CM (bolt gun). And have shot everything up to and including elk with it. Been out to 1,000 on the range, 425 on pigs, and 350 on elk. If you put that pill where it needs to be, it will do it's work.

That being said, if elk sized game was your primary concern, I would choose the .308. I have shot a large bull 3 times with my .300 WM, and watched him devour the first two (one in lungs, one hit back of heart) and try to trudge on. Some of them are just freaking tough.

THAT being said, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a big bull at ethical ranges with my 6.5CM, after seeing its effectiveness. My 6.5 will be along for the ride on my elk hunt this fall, not my .300WinMag.

I'm no help...

I have both.

I have an AR10 in 308 that i've had for maybe 8 years. I got it because:
1) I wanted an other AR
2) I wanted a heavier round compared to my AR15 in .223 for when I shot at bigger pigs. The 223 will do the job but I didnt like having to track pigs....the 308 makes a bigger hole

A few years ago when there was a lot of hype about long range shooting with the 6.5 creedmoor I considered building a second upper for my AR10. I shopped around at some different gun stores (even eyeguy) and most said to get the best results with the 6.5 creedmoor you really needed to go the bolt action route. So thats what i did, I got the 6.5 in bolt action and its been my go to deer gun the last 2 seasons.

I generally carry both guns during hunting season. If i'm looking to ambush and slaughter some pigs i go with the ar10-308. If i see a hog across the field or pasture 2-300 yds out i'll pull out the creedmoor try to "snipe" it. I've only missed 1 deer with my creedoor but being honest i think i hit the barb wire fence in front of the deer.

I have both and agree with CS. I love my .308 especially for big pigs, the 6.5 was great for deer.

So I guess the answer is... Why not both.:-)

AR10 - but for what use? If it's just for plinking with something larger than an AR15, then probably 308 as its cheaper to shoot and the barrel will last longer than a 6.5cm.

If your after accuracy then 6.5cm - but then you probably would be looking at bolt action as well as reloading.

Gun will be used mainly for pigs and possibly deer.

308.

if you want, get the 308 first, then can always purchase a 6.5 creed upper.

or you could go .260

or you could get a short barreled grendel, so you don't have to lug that big ol 308 around.

Would definitely suggest a Grendel over an AR10 any day. I have both calibers in an AR10 and they stay at home now. 123g 6.5 Grendel is all you need for deer and pigs and in a lot lighter setup.

Not worried about the weight. It would mostly be a truck Gun

I've yet to see an AR in 7mm-08 assuming they make it. It's a great caliber however

I own both AR10's

Flip a coin. They both have an excellent selection of ammo. 308 is tried and true. 6.5CM is the round that will be around for a long time seeing how new and popular it is. I could say more but its already been stated. If I had to have just one I would go 6.5CM
