I was In Moscow Idaho when it blew. The ash cloud that was moving towards us looked like the "end of times" in my 6 yr old mind!

Once the ash arrived, it built up like a snow storm, had 5-6" everywhere.

My dad was in the area on business when it happened. I still have a vial of ash he brought back.

The amount of energy released from that eruption was greater than any atomic bomb ever created by man.

Somewhere at my folks' house I've got a prescription bottle full of ash that I had when I was a kid.

That would be insane.

We went up there about three years ago, it's just amazing seeing the effects of the blast and how much effect it still has on the local ecosystems even today.

Flying to McChord AFB, we were able to do a fairly low-level pass over Mt. St. Helens. It was a sight I will never forget.

This was early nineties, so the damage and its extent was still easily seen. Probably still is.

Just checked on Google earth... yep the damage is still very visible.
Tens of thousands of dead trees still floating in Spirit Lake, 40 years after the fact.

In 2005 we drove up to see Mount St. Helens. One of the coolest parts was seeing Coldwater Lake, which was formed with the eruption. It's crazy to think about a natural lake only being a couple of years older than me.

Never knew anything about Spirit Lake until now.

So I am guessing the short growing season coupled with the trees being encased in ash is what has preserved them for 40 years in the lake?

That's crazy... I wonder if there have been any studies done on the aquatic ecosystem of the lake....

The most impressive thing I've ever seen is Grand Canyon ... until I saw Mt St Helens.

It looked like the moon. And what made it impressive was it took about 30 seconds to make it look like that.

To me the amazing part of the films and footage of the lahars that resulted, and the people that were camped or out hiking so close to it that survived the event.

Obviously this wouldn't compare...and I don't know what made me think of it...but are there any accounts of people who were on the viewing deck of the Empire State Building when the Twin Towers were hit?

I feel like this would be a similar feeling watching a volcano suddenly erupt. The feeling of not knowing what was going to happen and being absolutely helpless to stop it or do anything.

I could use a Mt St Helens right now. I could use about 100 of them.

That event is what I point to when the "Global Warmers" preach gloom and doom about air pollution. Mother Nature belched more pollution into the atmosphere in the relatively short period of time that it lasted than all of the automobile pollution in history, and yet nature "cleaned up" the atmosphere in a matter of months, if not days-weeks. It's a lesson in common sense the GW crowd refuses to learn/heed. But then, it's all about the $$$...

There are many trees still standing in North Texas lakes >40 years after their impoundment. Cellulose is tough stuff.

If I remember what the continuous video said at Mount St Helen's it was something like the equivalent of one atomic bomb every nine seconds.....
