I started in the military board and was told y'all would actually be a better fit for my question: My husband wants a tactical shotgun, and I'm thinking of getting him one for Father's Day.

He's mentioned a Mossberg. Something about a halo ring sight and a sling underneath for when you're pumping the shotgun? What the heck does he want? Help me make Fathers Day special for my favorite dog dad who's been stuck working from home (normal for him) while I'm now working from home too on endless meetings and calls!

The tactical shotgun supply pipeline has been hard hit the past two months so they may be hard to find locally.

He is basically wanting a short barrel shotgun. Google "gunbroker tactical shotgun" and you can find pics and descriptions.

Start by looking at the Mossburg 590.

I'd start here-

The sling request sounds like he wants a Shockwave or similar

Safest bet is to get a Shockwave and a Benelli pump so both of y'all are ready to go

He might want a Beretta 1301

If you're not sure exactly what model he wants, maybe get him a box of shells and a note that says "for your new shotgun" and let him buy it?

That way you dont buy the "wrong" gun.

Just make sure they are at least 12ga... It might come off a little wrong if you do this with a box of 20ga or .410

THIS is the right answer. It won't be any less special, but he will sincerely appreciate having exactly the right gun for years to come.

Years back, I mentioned several times to my wife about wanting a planer for woodworking. I meant a Dewalt thickness planer. For Father's Day, she got me an electric hand plane. Right name, wrong tool for what I wanted to do. I expressed joy and appreciate, as I knew she really tried hard. She just got what whoever she talked to at Home Depot recommended. It didn't take long for her to realize it wasn't quite right. She felt bad, I felt bad. I feel bad every time I look at it in the cabinet, where it sits not getting used.

I have gotten gift cards and wonderful notes of appreciation for stuff like that since then. Even when she wanted to buy me a new grill- a personal note saying "here is $X for a new grill" was awesome. 1/2 the fun is researching and getting exactly what you want. I'm thankful for that present every time I fire it up, and told her how much I appreciated it just yesterday, after years of weekly use.

All that to say, it really is the thought that counts. Don't force it if you don't know exactly what he wants. Things like this can be very specific and personal.

Ive mentioned before that I have my grandfathers rifle. I also have a box of 300 Win Mag. At some point my grandmother decided to buy ammo for granddad, told the guy he hd a "300".

So now I have a Savage in 300 Savage and a random old box of 300 Win Mag.

Many many moons ago my dad asked for a sawzall. He got a hand saw, because, well, 'it saws all'.

I wouldnt get a gift card. It limits where he can purchase the firearm. Could find it cheaper and the right gun elsewhere

I can see it now: "Oh man, you gave me a Visa gift card. I only shop at stores that accept MasterCard"

OP for years I just get what I want and have the wife wrap/present the item. Works well for both of us. Hand drills, chainsaw etc

OP, since your off the market, can you give my wife some gift buying lessons?

590 SPX appears to fit the specs, has the front strap and the ghost right sight. As far as I can tell, It's the only one on the mossberg site that has both.
