Talked to RSR (one of my wholesalers) - Ammo supply

So, just as an FYI, the only thing on genuine shortage right now is 9mm. 556 and 22lr are fairly available, though even those have been hit a bit. However, every one of my distributors is out of range ammo in 9mm. So, the stuff we sell for like $15 a box and cheaper is all completely gone. I've also seen a major uptick in sales, which is crazy since I thought we would be in for a rough ride with how crude fell. This uptick seems to be market wide and RSR, who is usually my most reliable shipper, has gone from every order that is placed by 3pm gets shipped out same day to at least a day and a half in delay on shipping out. Bill Hicks is nearly a week out on shipping right now.

What does this all mean? Well, for one, there will be shortages of 9mm ammo for the foreseeable future. The rest is ok right now (I can still get $25 a brick 22lr ammo pretty easily and I ordered some bulk pack 556 without any problem) but 9mm will be short supply for at least a month and we're probably looking at several months. Otherwise, I'm not trying to support going out and making a run on things. You guys know I don't really do that. However, if some info falls into my lap, I like being able to relay it if it helps anyone with making decisions.

****, I've had half my safe full of ammo since Obama's first term.

I buy ammo when I find a sale, not because I need more.

Totally understand and that's how a lot of people are. However, we also have a lot of people that are active target shooters that blow through a lot more ammo or people who are getting into something for the first time. This will affect them the most right now.

Midway is also stocked out of some of the larger quantities of 9mm bullets. I have no idea why there is a run on cheap 9mm ammo and reloading components.

Good question. Makes about as much sense as the shortage on toilet paper.

I just bought some bulk 9 from SGAmmo, but thats mainly because TEG keeps selling me fun guns that make me blow through 9, more stockpiling to get me through the next few weeks than anything.

What do yall define as reasonable quantities to stockpile?

Yea I learned my lesson after Sandy Hook(RIP). I used to be a buy as you go person. I think, and I dont remember exactl now, I had one full magazine for my Glock, maybe 8 or 9 38sp, about that much 30-06, and a half a box of dove shot. Suddenly nothing.

I am not a big shooter, but I could never buy another round and not come close to running out for about 8 different guns.

One week's global production sound reasonable?

Just stopped by Academy for some ammo for the weekend, shelves at been obviously hit, but still a decent selection.

The cashier did mentioned it was "ammo day", but no one in line had an insane amount.

Depends on what you do.

Someone like my granddad could last for years on a 100 rounds of 12 gauge shells and 40 rounds of rifle ammo, because what little shooting he did was mostly confined to while he was hunting.

I try to average 1-2 handgun competitions a month and 4-5 practice sessions a month. Been less than I'd like lately due to other priorities. But if I was all in on shooting at the expense of other activities, I could very easily need 500-1000 rounds just for the month, and I'm not a high volume guy compared to most competition shooters.

I don't know exactly what I have on hand right now, but I try to keep enough to make it through a couple of matches and range practice sessions without running low so I've got at least 500-1000 for .38, 9mm and .45 just so things like this stupid panic or sandy hook panic or whatever stupid panic comes next doesn't keep me from being able to go shoot a match.

So if you asked my granddad how much he needed for a year, and asked me how much I needed for a year....you'd get two wildly different answers.

If you're not a high volume guy, the "reasonable stockpile" I'd like to have as a bare minimum regardless of my situation would be 100 rounds of quality self defense ammo for your carry gun and home defense rifle that you've tested to be reliable in your guns and zeroed with, plus however much shotgun and rifle ammo you'd need to take every hunting trip you might plan on for the next year without worrying about needing to buy ammo.

Beyond that if you want to plan for zombies, have fun. Ammo doesn't depreciate much and is more inflation proof than cash, so if you've got the extra funds and the space to store it, build an ammo fort if you'd like.

Your going to get a lot of wild answers. But I would say that a proper amount is enough where you never have to buy anymore for the rest of your life and will not run out.

So, for a guy like me that doesn't shoot much at all outside of hunting, it's a lot less than a guy like Bender who shoots as a sport.

I'm only in my 30s and don't have MFBarnes fake money/mansion and garage space so that plan is right out.

Haha. Yea. Unless your name is Bender.

Maybe a better way to put it would be enough to survive on minimums for the rest of your life. If all of a sudden you could never again buy another round you would be able to properly defend yourself and hunt. So for a guy in his 40s(me), a couple hundred rounds of hunting cartridges and a couple thousand rounds of pistol ammo, and a bunch of .22 and bird shot.

I boughht about 20 green boxes of 06, 30-30, and ,257 Roberts several years ago, as well as three range buckets of 9mm, one of 38spc, and a case of bird shot. And 500 rounds of 7.62 x 39. Oh and a couple thousand 22lr. Except for the bird shot the rest of it is sealed in ammo cans or they came sealed and are all buried in the back of a closet. I could get thru the rest of my life with that if I had too.

I have other ammo that I hunt and shoot with. Probably about the same amount.

And remember I went into the Sandy Hook tragedy with maybe 50 total cartridges. Lesson learned.

I learned my lesson after that persistent ammo shortage 5 or so years ago. First ammo was in short supply and then reloading supplies.

That's why when I went to buy cheap 9mm ammo online and saw sporadic stock outs, I went to the Midway site and stocked up a bit on bullets. I have enough powder and primers already. I don't know if this is the start of a pre-election run on supplies or what is going on.

It cracks me up that you always say this, when I'm definitely on the very low end of the bell curve for rounds fired in the competition world.

I'm starting to have suspicions that where I am on that bell curve is somehow related to why I'm such a mediocre competitor.

I bought 2 boxes of 9mm Fiocchi 147 grain JHP last night. It's not "range cheap" but it's cheap and loads great. I bought two boxes of 7mm-08 too but wouldnt expect that caliber to be sold out throughout this fiasco

Buy'em cheap, stack'em deep

I dont know man. You shoot more in a year than I shoot in a decade. Maybe more. And I think I'm a lot closer to the average but who knows.

I will say guys like you make me go shoot more than I would otherwise. Otherwise I would never shoot outside of hunting. And I do really enjoy it every time I go. I went three times over deer season and we brought maybe ten different guns. It was a lot of fun.
