I went through this several years ago with a blue tick coonhound. The cap finally passed after the vet gave her an enema and something else. 24 hours and $350.00 later she was good as new.

Hours to weeks/months depending on the object and the size of your dog.

I had an Aussie scarf down a popsicle from one of the local urchins a few years back. She passed the stick about 2 days later.

general question - I've always heard it is better to not induce vomiting if there is potential damage from the thing coming back up?

It is shocking what a dog can get to pass entirely through their digestive tract.

When I was going to A&M back in the '80's, I knew a guy who was convinced that his dog ate his Aggie ring. He spent a week digging through dog turds with a stick in his backyard looking for his ring. He finally decided to do laundry one day and found his ring under the pile of dirty laundry. From that day on, he was known as "Sh*t Stick".

I'd monitor him closely. If he begins vomiting or not eating food, then you probably have an obstruction and will definitely need to get him to the ER. But you'd be surprised what a dog can pass.

My golden ate a squeaker a few months ago. One emergency surgery and an overnight stay later, he's good as new, but I was $3,000 poorer.

One of my stupid Goldens ate half of an aluminum can. Took her to the vet, but the vet said just to watch for it to pass. He said that he's seen dogs eat all kinds of sharp stuff and it usually passes in a couple of days with any damage. Sure enough, saw a shiny turd a few days later.

Senior year of college my dachshund ate a 1.5x1.5" piece of a roof shingle.
