I was really surprised this morning to stumble into some nice beaver sign in Austin.
This was on WIlliamson Creek near the intersection of Manchaca & Ben White Blvd.
I had no idea beaver had penetrated this far inside the city limits. Several willow & young Cottonwood trees were downed in the area, no sign of a dam.

We need more research on beaver penetration. And not this anecdotal stuff I mean real hard numbers.

Must be a sizable beaver to handle that much wood.

They're all over in the greenbelts in the suburbs of Carrollton, TX. The city traps several per year.

A lot of times they don't build a dam per say, but will create a burrow in the side of the creek. Look for a tunnel or slide within a 1/4 mile or so.

You really can only find them on the weekends when they migrate up from San Marcos.

Usually, Austin Beavers are hard to spot because of the thick bushes they live in...

Lots of really nice beavers in Austin. Population is in decline though as the beavers in Austin eat each other.

I looked around but didn't see one... I figured they had a tunnel under water into the back that came back up above the water line. Lots of fences & private property concerns to keep me from wandering too much.

Accidentally caught one, and skinned one, in a 'coon trap on the Salado Creek near Belton in the late '70s. I won't skin another one.

Found similar trees last February on the Colorado at the Lost Pines Resort west of Bastrop.

Beaver is an acquired taste. Some good...some bad. I've loved them all the same.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just like your opinion man!

Some can be quite pungent, but once you get past the smell, you got it licked!

I did some beaver hunting last night and I disagree they make good hats, unless the one I saw had some genetic thing to make it hairless.

I have seen a few beaver out on Decker lake while fishing there. Also are some river otters that live in there.
