They're still there. Look that way every time I pass and regularly see quail up on the sides if it's late evening or early morning. There is also a ranch right next door with a decent elk herd... part of the reason I am always looking that way.
Pigeons are easy to trap if you can find a place to trap them. I bought a trap off of Cabela's when I was in Arizona and would trap at two dairies. Plenty of city birds. Just a thought.
Absolutely. The way we taught our bird dogs growing up was with pigeons. We weren't training them on retrieving a specific type of bird. Rather, to spot and retrieve a bird after the sound of a gun going off.
Ok I was thinking training as more stalk and point.
Side note. Buddy always puts a couple of whole doves in his freezer and off season he works his dogs tossing the frozen birds in his yard to keep them Sharp
You put the pigeons to sleep before you plant them. Pigeons are great for training gun dogs. I used to trap them under a bridge close to my house. I put a sign on my trap that said "Avian Virus Testing. Do not Touch or Remove". I'd usually trap 6-12 overnight.
Yep, like FIDO said. You just hold the bird upside and shake your hand/wrist in a circle. Makes the birds dizzy as heck and you can plant them in a clump of grass. Wild pigeons are going to be much stronger and actually flush like a wild bird, than a fat pen raised quail. I always loved using Chukar too but they were high $.
