Hi everyone,

I've heard great things from some online forums about LMB fishing at Gibbons Creek in January-February. Have any of y'all had success this time of year, and if so is the warm water discharge/spillway a good spot? I have never been before and would really appreciate some general tips/parking and walking directions.

Thanks!

It is fine but since its only open on the weekends it tends to be a bit crowded.

Pay attention to the restricted areas on the south end before the dam. There are no signs along the shoreline. The only sign I saw says no unauthorized vehicles beyond this point on the dirt road headed to the small boat ramp.

I had no idea I was breaking the law, but the game warden stopped me as I was walking back to the truck. He gave me a ticket for fishing in a restricted area and a warning for criminal trespass.

It was a great day of fishing though!

The discharge is on the opposite side of the lake than the spillway and you need a boat to get to it, but the plant is closed and has been for a while so there isn't a hot water discharge anymore.

The only time I've fished in the spillway was for gar and we didn't catch anything. There used to be a lot of lily pads around the boat ramp.

Gibbons used to be awesome. Then they decided to kill all the grass in it and the fishing went severely downhill as far as bass is concerned. They constantly started raising their prices and I haven't been back in probably 2 or 3 years. I think it was $7/person then so a trip with my dad and brother was $21.

Maybe since they closed the plant they'll let the grass grow back but before they did it if you could find grass you could find fish.

Exact same thing happened to me!! No signs! Came here to post same. Good fishing below spillway but kind of risky for BS ticket.

Red line is the restricted area I was in. Red circle is where I tore them up. It was during the spawn and shallow where most boats couldn't access.

I haven't been back since then and that was 2010

Catfish used to be great there in April, May and June but like most, I've given up on Gibbons since it's only open on weekends.
Fair winds and a following sea.

Can't speak specifically to Gibbons creek, but my go to lure in any moving water for Bass is a ball jig in 1/8-3/8 oz on 3/0 hook and green pumpkin grub (zoom fat Albert). It is pretty good lure in lakes as well. Went to the Huntsville state park a few years back and my son and I were catching 4-5 lb Bass off of the banks while the big Bass boats in the lake were striking out. Get a few and try it at Gibbons creek.
