I'm currently looking at purchasing a Browning HC Speed in .300 Win Mag. Does anyone own one that can give me the pros and cons on it? TIA

Sorry, can't give you first hand info. I looked at that, Kimber Mountain Ascent, and Tikka Tx3 Lite. I chose the Tikka. All my research showed similar accuracy and weight, but the Tikka was so much less expensive, but with lots of customization options.

I have one in 7mm-08. Accurate rifle out of the box. Have carried it on long treks. No complaints from me. Action is smooth. I was able to adjust the factory trigger down to just under 3lbs which is where I want it in a hunting rifle. Last I checked, any after market triggers require a little bit of shaving the stock but maybe they have something new out there now.

I've put about 200 rounds through it and enjoyed everyone of them. In 7mm-08, you can shoot it all day long. I wonder how the 300 win will treat ya with the light weight of the rifle.

I have it in 6.5 creed and love it. I am putting a can on it this week.

I think a 300 win mag on such a light platform might kick a little more than a heavier platform.

I didn't think about recoil with it being lightweight. The majority of the time I'm going to be hunting stationary so I'm not against the HC long range either. I've got a featherweight .280 and that sucker does kick like a mule.

I put a break on the Tikka and it's negligible.

I purchased one in 7mm rem mag last year. They come with a muzzle brake and a good recoil pad out of the box. I spent a lot of time at the range before my elk hunt this year and recoil was not an issue. Wasn't able to connect with an elk but I had a vortex razor LH on top and it was a pleasure carrying around the mountains.

Happy so far.

Tikka t3x lite owner as of this year for elk hunting. The first time I shot it, recoil was surprising but not bad. The rifle got pretty close to scoping me due limp shouldering it, I guess. (I always wondered how folks get scoped but I guess its when they don't know how much recoil to expect??)
After feeling it the first time, I shoot with a strong shoulder and it's not an issue. I'm not going to say its fun shooting an entire box, but shooting a handful of rounds to sight in or for practice it's not terrible. It's not a gun I bought for plinking, and has a specific purpose so I'm not worried about recoil.

Who cares about recoil?

Shoot it less than 20 times to get zeroed and make sure it shoots your ammo well. Maybe 40 times total if you have a couple loads to check.

Shoot one group every year to confirm zero.

Shoot at animals when you'll have zero ****s to give about recoil

I have the 300wsm in the western hunter. I wanted the hells canyon but they didn't have any in stock when I bought. Don't worry about the recoil, it comes threaded with a brake. Far and away the best gun I've owned. It has grouped with every factory round I've tried.

My dad has the Hell's Canyon Long Range in 300wm, he was going to get rid of it then decided to keep it (has 3 total 300wm). The gun shoots extremely good, it is light but not too light, recoil isnt as bad as my X-bolt 300wm stalker that I use to have. The only gripe he had with it was when purchasing additional mags trying to get one that would reliably feed, he had to send several back before he was able to get an additional one that worked.

Actually found one on clearance at the Bass Pro Bridgeport CT store and they are shipping it down to the local BP for me to pick up. I'm pretty pumped.

I imagine there are plenty of people who go out west every year and bust their ass to get a shot at a legal bull or buck. If they're like me, they'll shoot multiple range sessions and multiple boxes of ammo to ensure they're dialed in from 100 yards to 500+ in the months leading up to the trip.

Not to mention I also shoot year round on a monthly basis with buddies who enjoy long range shooting (more than me). Recoil not only impacts accuracy, but your want to shoot a box or two of ammo each time when you go.

It's a valid concern that only gets more impactful the older you get. Something younger guys like you and I don't think about.

Different guns have different purposes.

A light weight, mountain gun isn't a range gun.

Long range fundamentals stay the same with different calibers, shoot either a lighter recoiling round or the same round in a heavier gun for range work and practice.

Going through the effort of a western hunt, while handicapping yourself with a less recoiling round doesn't make sense to me.

Some day after debt is paid off, this company takes off a little more, and 2 small kids don't kill my budget I hope to be able to have safe full of rifles as well. That's not reality for most of the country.

You're single, with little expenses thanks to Uncle Sam, and money to burn. I miss those days. Most people aren't in that situation. I try to keep that in mind when posting responses on here.

You are both right with valid opinions.

My Browning 300WM will punish you if not shot correctly. It was a gift and the barrel is too thin to be threaded. The damn thing will drive nails though.

I shoot a lot getting ready to hunt Elk out to 500. I manage the recoil well but my hunting buddy shoots a 7 mag with a break and he will not touch my gun.

My Browning shoots half the groups of his SAKO but every gun is different.

The MCARBO spring will take it down another pound. I have mine set at 2.25# on the 300WM. I could go less but I like it there. My 25-06 is still set at factory. It shoots too well to take apart. When I shoot up my last box of ammo I will drop it down some. I have a spring for it on the shelf. I love the clean break of my Browning triggers.

Also timney now makes a trigger for the x-bolts that my dad put in his and it made a world of difference!

I really want to love these... but that damn metric thread pitch on the barrel pretty much makes them a no go for me since I'd run it suppressed.

Some stocks require milling for the Timney but the deal breaker for me was that the safety would no longer lock the bolt. I don't need the bolt falling open while running around the mountain.

Minor stock fitting is required for most trigger systems across all rifle brands. Can't attest to the bolt delete but that's a plus to me so I can work the action on safety(without pushing the little button).

Yeah, saw those. But not exactly the most aesthetic look for that high dollar of a rifle

I'm looking at the same gun. Question is would you cerakote your scope bronze to match the gun and what height does the OB recommend for the scope mounts?

Inn N know the cerakoting is personal opinion regarding aesthetics but I've seen some guys who do good work (or. They don't cover over all your scope markings).

It will depend on the scope but the short through on the X-Bolt will let you us lower than typical rings.I have low for my 40mm and medium for my 50mm.

I have a Browning Hells Canyon Long Range (26 in barrel with suppressor) in 6.5 Creedmore that is a tackdriver. I also just picked up a X-Bolt Pro Tungsten .308 (22 inch barrel that I have will be ordering a Thunder Beast Ultra 7 suppressor) that is a nail driver as well. Both guns I had the Timney triggers put on them

6.5 results with factory Hornady 143 ELD-X ammo:
