I've asked this on the home Improvement board without a lot of response.

I've got asiatic jasmine creeping into my st Augustine yard to the point that removing it by hand isn't really an option.

Is there a way to get rid of it without killing the grass?

Mow it short

I've been dealing with this for Over 10 years. Hand removal only slows it down but won't get rid of it. I think my only option is going to be to spray it with remedy and then wait months and then replace the grass. Either that or removal of both grass and jasmine being extremely anal to remove any and all root pieces.

Broad leaf killer like "2,4-D"

I've got 40' or so that butts up to st aug. I use moss rock as a barrier. I used to run the trimmer on both sides of the rock but anymore I only have to do the grass side. A trench edge with the trimmer approach would work too.

Ask the Agronomist (TM) says.....

Weed B Gone FOR SOUTHERN LAWNS. Add enough Dawn to insure the jasmine leaves get wet - they are slick. It will likely take more than one treatment.

I'm not going to argue with you but this Jasmine stuff even laughs at Roundup so not sure that weed b gone will work.

I'm assuming you are recommending the liquid? Would I apply it in a pump up sprayer adding dawn like you suggest or in the type of sprayer you put on the bottom of the hose? If it works it seems like a much easier solution.

I kill the weeds growing in my jasmine with roundup. There are zero visual effects to the jasmine. It's some tough stuff. It even grows under my trailer with almost no sunlight for months at a time.

Exactly my experience. It laughs at roundup which is why I don't have confidence in the product agronomist recommended. I've been worried about using something stronger in my yard but the huge red oak I had recently died so I'm more inclined to use something stronger. I've used Remedy/Diesel in other spot treatment and while that killed the jasmine it took weeks.

It's a perennial broadleaf with a slick leaf - of course it laughs at Roundup. Roundup is a far better grass killer than broadleaf killer, overall. Monsanto even knew this from the beginning, and developed Landmaster and Landmaster BW, with a sniff of 2,4-D and Dicamba, respectively, to take out broadleaf weeds more efficiently.

The Weed B Gone can be found pre-mixed in a small spray bottle. It says it has surfactant, but use some extra dawn to be sure the chemical spreads and sticks. It also helps break down any waxy coating.

Ok, guess I don't know everything. I'm going to give it a try! "The more you know! Thanks!

When you say add dawn, how much do I add? Do I just open the bottle and pour some in? The weed b gone I've always seen has been in one of those hose attachment bottles.

Any suggestions on products?

Also, I've got a mature oak tree near the area where the Jasmine needs to be removed. Will
Any of these products hurt the tree?

I mix my own but I think a product called Crossbow may be that mix. If the tree is mature it should not be a problem. Don't use near new plantings or if you are thinking of planting a young tree within 6 months or so. The 2,4-D isn't an issue with those but the triclopyr is the one to use more caution.

I have serious doubts whether that will be safe on Augustine. It is a grass, but sensitive to many broadleaf herbicides (that's why weed b gone has more than one formulation).

The pre-mix little hand spray bottles are easy to add Dawn to. Open 'er up and add a teaspoon or 2.

I'm reading it as he's wanting something to control the border and keep the jasmine from creeping over. I agree I would would not spray down the St. Augustine with it as a selective herbicide.

No I need to get the asiatic jasmine out of my st Augustine as it has invaded well into it.

I'm going to give the weed b gone a shot

It's creeping into the grass. If it was jasmine all by itself I'd have said smoke it with a 2,4,-D/Roundup mix.

I misunderstood - I agree, try the weed b gone and add some surfactant as suggested by B-1. You'll likely need several applications closer together than the label says. It may stress your grass some. Good luck.

Agree. For really hard stuff - like poison ivy, English ivy, wood ivy - I make a homemade 2-4,D/roundup/triclopyr

Crossbow (2,4-D, Triclopry mix) will definitely kill Asiatic jasmine but is not St. Augustine safe. I killed a side bed of Jasmine with crossbow with no issues. I would not try to spray it on St. Augustine.
