We had to say goodbye to our 17 year old Gus this morning. Came home last night and he was lame in one back leg. Wife x-rayed this morning and he had a fractured femur, most likely from osteosarcoma. He joins his almost 17 yo brother Woodrow that we lost in May. We had them for 15 years.

Based on your pups names, I'm sure they had strong personalities, and lived up to their namesakes. And by God, we've sure got our hands full with our Gus. He is definitely and Augustus McCrae.

We named our #1 kiddo Augustus after Lonesome Dove, even though my wife won't admit it. We were halfway through the pregnancy when we watched LD, her first time. I threw the name out jokingly (as I'm quoting the entire movie), and she latched on. And I actually wasn't completely sold on the name until he was born. She claims the we didn't name our kid after a "Bible-reading, whiskey-drinking, *****mongering cowboy". Uh-huh.

Still hard to say goodbye though.

We got Gus before Woody and they definitely lived up to the names. Gus was a chill and lazy dude and Woodrow was always patrolling the yard. They make the 7th and 8th dogs we've lost along with 3 cats. All we have now is Oliver, who we took in when my Mom died.

ETA, to add one more pic. This is Google Streetview from when we lived in Wimberley. Gus didn't like the Google car and Woodrow was rounding the corner to help.
