Heard some good things second hand. Wondering if anyone can share any knowledge or experience they have with the breed in the context of being a family pet and/or hunter. Thanks in advance for your time.

Had two. Great, great dogs. Point, retrieve and can be trained to track. Good family dog too.

Or you get tired of hair all over your house.

Check out the FB page called "Wild Bird Hunters Classifieds, Litter Announcements, Stud Dogs, Etc.". Found my draht I pick up this Thursday on there, and they have Griffons from hunting lines on there quite often.

I've got 2. Absolutely the most versatile dogs I've ever seen. They will go all day in the field, but are never crazy in the house. The main difference I see between them and other pointers or retrievers is the urgency (or lack there of) in which they do everything. They tend to do everything at their own pace and I don't ever see the full blown sprint that I see with other breeds.

Both of mine came from Larry Woodward at Aux Lake Kennels up in Kansas. Probably the one of the most knowledgeable people in the Griff world.

Lack of urgency to me is a non desirable attribute. Lazy and slow are the words I would use.

I also spend some time searching for my pointers. So it kind of depends on what you're trying to accomplish I guess.

Versatile breeds find very few birds that you weren't already gonna find anyways and lack pointing instincts. They don't make difficult retrieves either and won't handle like a retriever will on blind retrieves. (Someone is gonna say their dog does, and sure there are exceptions.)

You should pick a retriever if you're gonna hunt migratory birds most. Or you should get a true pointing breed if you're gonna hunt upland birds most.

Completely disagree with that, and know quite a few GSP owners that would take offense. Otherwise, the rest of your post is correct.

Don't get a dog with the "pointer/pointing" in its name and expect it to be as good of a retriever as a breed with "retriever" in its name.

WPG are referred to as a "walker's hunter" as the most they will typically range is 50-75 yards. Occasionally, mine will go further if he gets on a scent, but he stays pretty close by most of the time. If you hunt big land where you need your dog to range 300+ yards, this isn't your dog.

If you have the time and money to train two dogs, one for retrieving and one for pointing, that would be ideal obviously. But that's not that case for the majority of people... hence the creation of versatile breeds.

I had one but between his beak, the feathers, and his personality...he was a handfull. Thinking I could keep him in an apartment was a fantasy

I'm actually with you here. What I forgot is that shorthairs sometimes get lumped into the "versatile breeds." Mine is zero percent versatile. But he will point every wild bird between here and the horizon!

I think you are referring to the wirehaired pointing griffidoodle.

I don't know a thing about this breed but I could be OK looking at this face every morning.

I have a 7 year old WPG. Search this forum, I have posted before but she is a fantastic point, good retrieve, and even better around the house. Disagree with poster above who said with versatile dogs you end up just getting the birds you walk in on. So many times our dog has pointed, we have walked in to flush the bird, no bird, no bird, no bird, we release her and she flushes a bird that we had almost kicked in the head.

I settled on a German wirehaired pointer who we will get this summer. This was after the last Lab didn't work out and I didn't find a local Griffon at a reasonable price.

Probably isn't even about the dog at this point. It is more how much time can I be off work to be outside.

A friend of mine recently got a WPG. She's only 6-months old so she hasn't truly been trained and put to the test yet but early indications are positive.

Reopening this thread for some help.

I'm looking to get a WPG or a DD in the next 6 months or so and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for kennels or places i could locate one.

I'm in the Houston area. Thanks!

DrahtAddiction and All Things Draht Facebook groups are a great place to start.

Also, Wild Bird Hunters Classifieds/Planned Breedings/Litter Announcements is another great page. I found my draht from this FB group.
