Saturday was a tough hunt. The morning was hot and humid with tons of mosquitoes, luckily the thermacell had them under control within 10 minutes. No deer but there was lots of hog action I could see in the distance. Moved from a prairie stand to a timber stand for the evening hunt. Again hot, luckily no mosquitoes but also no action.
I left the girlfriend in a popup blind next to our gator pond, around 6:45 I could hear the faint snapping of my suppressed ar going off. She shot 2 pigs but we only recovered 1.

Sunday morning went back out not expecting to find much. Our place is in the southwest corner of colorado county, about 400 acres that is half rice and half timber. Neighbors had a couple of teal hunter groups going strong but maybe the shotgun barrage had the deer moving along the timber.

Deer walks out and you could tell by the side profile a nice deer. A quick look my way shows well outside the ears. No time to lollygag, pull the bow back and let the muzzy fly.

The arrow dont lie....

My first typical 10!

I was hunting by myself. Talk about a pain trying to load up alone. Had to drag him to the road with the 4 wheeler and about gave myself another hernia getting him in the back of the truck. Tailgate pic give a good view of size and arrow entrance

Back at the house

My cousin is a taxidermist in Yoakum. Called him up and I'm his first whitetail of the season. Going to have a shoulder done. Dropped it off last night and he is going to text me the age and score.
Feel free to throw out your guesses and I'll update this afternoon.

UPDATED
Cousin scored him at 122 5/8
Jaw estimates at 4.5 yr old

Very Nice! My favorite deer picture is the walking up behind to recover.

Any idea what happened to his nose? Fighting already?

In the future, when you need to load one by yourself, tie a rope with a loop in it to the back tiedown in the bed of the truck, standing on the ground, pick his horns up as high as you can and hook them in the loop, then get in the truck, grab his horns and drag him up and in.

Id say he looks 5 or more from your pics. Congrats!

Its possible, maybe fighting, maybe barbed wire. The taxidermist says he sees this on some of the big deer he gets out of south texas where these bucks are hitting the protein feeders really hard and wear the bridge of their nose raw sticking their mouths in the protein feeder spouts.

I have 2 protein feeders our place and neither one has shown him on camera but I know our neighbors feed protein all summer like we do

The bases of his antlers have bark crammed between the ridges so he might also rubbed his nose while making a scrape.

Nice job!

If you are going to do this alone, might want to buy a hitch mounted hoist. This is what I use to avoid hernia/ back issues! Get one before you get hurt, beats doing this alone (especially as truck beds get higher)

One of the best parts of this post is hearing that your girlfriend was in another blind popping hogs! Sounds like you did good all around!

Proof I actually have a hitch mounted hoist. Unfortunately I keep it at the house for cleaning deer by the barn.

Plus I had the trailer with the 4 wheeler hooked up to the truck. But that gives me an idea to install a receiver bar on the front corner of the trailer so I can use the hoist without unhooking the trailer. So thanks for that brain spark

Great job OP, that's a great looking buck thanks for posting! I've been in your shoes before and field dressing did the trick for me, heck of a lot easier to hoist or pull into a pick-up after dumping all that weight. If you were nervous about tearing up skin for the mount, for a shoulder mount just don't come up into the sternum (breast bone) at all with your knife, and get the heart and lungs out blindly with a knife and physical traction on the pluck.
