What do yall recomend using as a finish top coat for a set of corn hole boards?

Depends on the look you are going for. You can choose between different urethane finishes or also choose an epoxy resin.

Im thinking I want to go over a painted top with a decal.

If you have a decal on top then you will need quite a few coats of urethane in order to build up enough of a protective layer. I'd recommend going with an epoxy resin. I used Famowood from Lowes for mine.

Plenty of youtube videos with application tips/tricks. Top things are to make sure your boards are level, clean with denatured alcohol to get all surface dust, etc. off, and be patient while popping the bubbles with a map torch. Worst case scenario you screw it up - but light sanding and the application of a second coat and everything will look perfect.

Three coats o' poly

[urethane]. I used Minwax when I redid my 1886 house heart pine flooring. Looked great.

How does this work on the sides of the Cornhole boards? Does it run off the end and down the side boards? Or did you do them separately?

You pour it on the top and use a grooved grout trowel like below to spread it around.

it levels itself into an even coat and you let it flow over the sides and use a cheap brush to smooth out what flows over the sides. It sounds much harder than it really is.

We recommend throwing your corn hole boards in the trash and playing washers like a real man.
