Just a lurker, but i know the OB knows a lot of things...

I lost my best furry friend this weekend, completely unexpected. He was 6.5 and just way too young.

I can't imagine my life without a dog in it so I'm trying to start the process of getting another goofball at some point. I don't know if I'm going to get another dog right away, but I at least want to start doing my research on potential breeders and litter options for when I'm ready. I bought my boy from what I believed was a good breeder, but he did have dysplasia in 3/4 (2 mild, 1 moderate to severe) joints, and I don't want to go through that again. He came from parents who were screened and cleared, but I do wonder if maybe the breeder's screening didn't go far enough back, or if my guy was just 1 in a million in more than one way. I know things happen, I want to avoid that as best as possible for my next guy.

Any breeder recs? Will be looking for a yellow male pup. Things that are most important:

- Screened and cleared for Lab hereditary issues...great reputation of producing healthy dogs (obviously there's never a guarantee, but genetics I know play a part)
- Temperament
- More an English/show Lab look rather than the taller, slighter American/hunt Lab
- Will be a companion only, probably won't ever hunt, so would prefer staying away from the super high energy hunting lines
- Preferably somewhere in Texas, but honestly for the right breeder, I could go elsewhere. I would just prefer within 4ish hour drive of central Texas so I could easily go and check out the breeder's operation

I know this is soon. And like I said, I don't really know when I'll be ready. But I at least want to know where I want to go once I am. I looked at some of more recent past threads and have already reached out via email to Dickendall and Bear Paw to see if they have any litters, or if they have any breeders they recommend. Thanks all.

Check out Bonnie at Crumpler Kennels. Her dogs fit the look you are going for and have great hunting pedigree. Great price too. I bought a dog from her and have been very pleased with the demeanor, intelligence, and drive.

Edit: Just saw the dog will be a companion. Crumpler breeds hunting dogs but they are very well rounded so might still be worth reaching out. Either way best of luck!

Cadron Ridge labs in Greenbriar AR. My wife did a ton of research. They have every test on these labs you can run. English labs.

Call Rody Best at Best Retrievers. He's an Ag and though he trains hunting dogs, he can help you find what you are looking for. They have litters regularly from breeding of dogs they know and only after DNA testing. Take the time to find what you are looking for and don't try to save a couple of hundred dollars by settling for something iffy. Just tell Rody what you are looking for and he will point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the Recommendation and advice.

Price really isn't a factor for the right breeder and right dog. I mean, it is in that I don't want to be pay, you know, $5,000 since this won't be a dog used in any competitions or bred in the future. The breeder i got my dog from showed her dogs and won competitions with them, plus a few of the recommended folks show pricing on their websites, so I know about what breeders are charging for well bred companion pups and I'm good with it.

We got ours from www.hrkennels.com, can not recommend them enough. Really enjoy our girl from there. Great hunter and house dog with a fantastic personality. Also pretty low strung compared to some of the more energetic labs.

We got our English type lab from Homestead Labs out of Bandera. He has been a great addition to our family. He is very calm for a lab and is a great companion. This is our first time with more of an English type lab vs the american and I can really tell a difference in temperament. Best of luck to you.

This may be the opposite of what he's looking for...

Wildrose. They breed for hunting ability but also equally for temperament. I think you should be able to get on a list for pups from Wildrose Texas (Dallas) now and not have to go all the way to Mississippi. Males are right around 60#. My pup is 1.5, and I'm pretty sure I'll have at least 1 Wildrose lab the rest of my life.

I got my male from Edlyn Maidstone in Dallas area. He is exactly what you describe you want. Will get my next from her also.

Sorry for your loss.
