Was lucky enough to hunt with Henry a few times a few years befored he died. He cursed like a sailor but could quote the Bible. Very tough old guy. Very difficult to stay up with on a horse as well. He was just a walking bad@zz. It is also because of him that I have to give a grin when I hear of someone seeing a "Black Panthers" in
or, usually, even seeing a lion at all. Enjoy.

Not quite sure why anyone would think they need to kill that many mountain lions. Seem like getting one or two would be enough.

Really enjoyed that! Reminds of a great old cat hunter from South TX I knew growing up!

You obviously don't or never have owned livestock. Guess everyone entitled to their opinion.

That's where you'd be wrong because I have owned livestock. But you're right that everyone has an opinion.

Henry was contracted out to a lot of ranches all over west TX. I'm guessing that we're talking about thousands of square miles and, I belive some in NM too. He is why I chuckle when someone tell me how they see lions "all the time", he told me that he only saw 2 in his life that weren't first pushed by a dog.

He is also the reason that I smile when I hear guides/outfitters talk about how much land they have access to. So, we aren't talking about taking lions out of a concentrated area. We're talking about taking lions, over a lifetime out of an area bigger than most states.

Henry used to come and eat with us at our mule deer camp one night during our weeklong hunt. I could go on and on with stories but I will stick with one. He always had his truck rigged out with dog crates on one side and a mule stall on the other. Usually a 3/4 ton single cab Chevy with a pretty good lift on it. The height on the tail end was at least two feet, Mabe thirty inches. I asked him one night as he and little Terri were leaving how he taught that mule how to load in that truck with the high tail gate. He said, "I make him like it better to be in there than standing around out here." I'll leave that to the imagination. Texas treasure for sure.

Joe Ruffus Lyon?
Yes Sir thats the man! Last name is spelled Lyne. One of my big regrets is that I never got to hunt with him, had the chance a couple of times but just didn't work out.

My bad on the spelling. He was friends with my dad as well but I only have one memory of ever meeting him, he called me "rooster" when I was little, apparently that was his name for everyone because another person told me the same thing.

As the story goes, Joe pretty much hunted where ever the hell he wanted to. He was old school as hell. Those old hound hunters just arent around like they used to be.

I worked for Henry's grandson one summer and I heard a lot of good stories about Henry. That is an interesting family. Just a different breed of tough.

We had a thread many, many years ago where I discussed something along this line with Ursusguy.

If say you own a ranch in the Davis Mountain area of 64,000 acres or 100 square miles, raise cattle and love to hunt mule deer.

If you look at mule deer alone, if you are in the middle, you might have a mule deer population of 800-900.....could be much lower or even higher depending on habitat etc That's about 14 per 1,000 acres....tiny compared to whitetail population in other parts of the state.

Studies have indicated a mountain lion lion will kill every 5 days in this type of area. It's about every 7 days in colder states where the meat doesn't spoil so quickly.

Your MLDP quoto will be in the 40-60 range. Remove the cattle, How many mountain lions would you feel comfortable with?

I don't have an answer for that. I get protecting your livestock. Also it's not like I don't hunt. I'm just not as big on the harvest as I used to be. Probably mostly related to seeing areas I used to duck hunt as a kid not have ducks anymore and watching the quail population spiral into oblivion. I think if the hunt of a mountain lion is for trophy purposes, then one is enough. Just my opinion.
