Big Ass Fans alternative for covered patio

I'm adding a covered back porch to my house in Houston and have always thought a Big Ass Fan would move some serious air to keep us cool and mess up mosquitoes' flight plans as a secondary benefit. However, they seem to be quite pricey. Is there a comparable brand at a better price?

Also, any other ideas for what to build into the outdoor kitchen area are welcomed. Thanks y'all.

Running this under our carport and it moves plenty of air

Google HVLS fan.

There are lots of brands of out there beside Big Ass Fans. I have seen some that are the same quality but almost half the price.

You can always rig up a push mower on the ceiling. That'll keep the bugs down.

Big Ass Fans makes an outdoor 'residential' fan, I believe.

They call it the Haiku.

I firmly believe HVLS fans is a "you get what you pay for" scenario. I have used alternatives (macro air and hunter) in commercial projects and have experienced nothing but issues.

Ahem...it won't blow the air the right way and it's surprisingly difficult to mount safely.

I mean...you know...I would think.

they also push this brand in churches and such so not to have the word ASS visible.

It doesn't save any money, but we have a big porta-cool fan on the patio, it does a good job

Hows this fan holding up? I've found a lot of negative reviews online, but they could be fake. TIA

Bump.

Looking at oscillating for under a pergola as well.

Not a big *** fan alternative, but something else to consider if it fits your aesthetic.

Doesn't hurt that the owner is an Ag that goes to my church.

I would just roll with a large belt driven box fan. They can move a ton of air and movable. Key word; BELT DRIVEN to keep the RPMs and motor noise low.

I've got a few of these in various barns. They move a ton of air, but not as quiet as hvls fans. Noise is not from the motor, but air turbulence due to higher rpm.

I'm not sure about the Haiku, but damn 1500 for a fan at the house?

We've had one from HD that costs about 300 for 3 years now and it pushes some serious CFM. About 10k if I remember right. It's called the Kensgrove and the Brand is Home Decorators. It has bad reviews, but no real issues with ours.

I have one of these and my experience has been exactly the opposite. Moves very little air, even after installing a longer down rod. Also, have had it less than a year and it sounds like it's about to fall apart, very creaky.
