I have few Live Oaks and 1 Shumard Red Oak at my house that is about 1.5y since it was built. I had the red planted post summer last year, its about 15' tall 6" trunk or so while the live oaks are 8-10' with 4-6" trunks (Came with the house). I want to regularly provide my trees some food to help them grow. What should i buy from the box stores or online for a good food for them?

I have planted about 20 different oaks at my place and about 75 at my buddies ranch and they are doing well. I have been using 13-13-13 and put it out twice a year.

Move around the drip line and drive a rod into the ground about 6" deep and fill with fertilizer. I only do 3 spots on the trees that are smaller than my thumb but bump it up to 4 when they are 3-4 years old.

Started this on my tree at my house in Richmond and it has grown so much in the past 5 years.........its a bigger tree so I spaced my fertilizer out about every 6'

I use Jobes tree spikes. My house is 4 years old. So is my neighbors. I don't think the previous owners did anything. My live oak trees are nearly twice as tall and much fullers.

I used tree spikes from the local hardware store on ours and they seemed to really help.

Do a soil test and send it to the A&M soil science lab first. Applying fertilizer just to apply it without knowing your soils limiting factors can create more issues than benefits. I can't recall the number of trees I've looked at over the past 25 years that we're struggling from too much phosphorus in the soil- typically caused by triple 13 applications. Not saying triple 13 is a bad fertilizer...make sure you're applying what's needed.

In addition to the soil test, it is important to know WHEN to fertilize trees. Root growth takes place in the Fall, so that is when fertilizer may be most beneficial.
