I have used the Blue Diamond stump bucket on front of 55 horse Mahindra tractor to pull mesquite effectively.

Used on a skid steer, the stump bucket is much more efficient I am sure. But I have pulled 4 - 6 inch diameter mesquite up, with 2 or more feet of intact tap root, as well as smaller diameter mesquite. In northern Grimes County with heavy black dirt and clay.

My Father in Law has one these that he uses on his 262D Cat skid steer. Works like a champ on mesquite trees.

The good thing is you can pop the tree out then use the dirt in the bucket to backfill the hole

Has anyone compared stump buckets to any grubbers like this on a ctl for taking out mesquites? Particularly the economy Old style grubber on the following page?

Threads like this are why I'm still hanging out on the OB.

My dad went through a spell where he was pulling mesquite with a full sized back hoe. It looked like a cool idea until you tried to walk the pastures he had treated. Sure, mesquite were down but you'd be at risk of an ACL or meniscus falling in all the dang holes. A device that would allow consistent back filling would be really useful. Thankfully that back hoe died and we are back to chemical treatments.

I use a Blue Diamond grubber for mesquite, white brush, and persimmon. No problem. You probably need a stump bucket for cedar. In the case of cedar and large mesquite, size does matter.

If used on a tractor front end loader...are you grubbing in the blind or can you see alright?

Certainly there are inferior sight lines from a tractor versus a skid steer. But it didn't take long to get used to the sight lines and get a feel for it. Really pretty effective in getting mesquite pulled.

A skid steer would definitely be quicker in terms of manueverability, meaning getting a given area cleared of mesquite quicker than with a tractor.

I've been amazed at how similar working the stump bucket is to digging with a shovel. The curvature of the stump bucket enables one to work back and forth with your tilt, to get deep enough to ensure extraction of 2 or more feet of the tap root, well below the growth ring. And like a shovel, there is added leverage from the curvature.

How big of mesquites are you guys tackling with these attachments?

I've pulled little 2 feet tall one stem mesquite, to 1" diameter multi-stems all connected to 3" diameter tap root, to 3 - 4" multi-stems with 4" diameter tap root and root ball of 2 - 3 feet and canopy taller and wider than the cab of the 55 horse tractor I am using.

I've decided to not tackle pullling mesquite with trunks greater than 4", but rather to cut them and treat the stumps with remedy and diesel. It's not that I couldn't get them pulled with my tractor/stump bucket combo, but the time involved is too great. I've got plenty of the smaller trees and getting them out of the pasture will make a world of difference.

So far this has been fairly accurate...

Mas89, what makes the Intimidator better than a stump bucket or grubber? Have you used all 3, or what made you try the Intimidator?

What type of soil and size of mesquite were you working in?
