How long do you want to ignore this user?
So I bought a house last summer with a chain link fence around the main yard but I'm chewing through line on it at an unreasonable rate. I have 3 acres so I have a lot of additional weed eating to do all time.

Does anyone have any line recommendations for chain link fences? I have an Echo SRM-266.

Easiest by far.

Roundup the fence lines. As others said, it's the only way.

Thanks folks. I was hoping to use Roundup as a last resort but sometimes you just have to go with what works the best.

Has anyone tried those supposedly indestructible fixed lines? The ones that don't feed off of a reel?

Since you want to forever kill everything at the fence... You might go with a salt solution of some kind if you don't want the glycophosphate.

Any reccomendations on salt solution? I have a ton of fenceline I use roundup on and am always looking for a cheaper solution.

Maybe pour some rock salt along the fence line. I'm sure the fence is galvanized, but too much salt might still start some corrosion you might not like later on.

I saw someone on FB, yeah yeah i know, talking about 1 gallon of vinegar, 1.5 cups epsom salt, and two table spoons of dawn soap for use around a garden. Can't hurt to try I suppose...

There was a time when pouring old oil along the fence worked well.

Do you buy it at the feed store where farmers/ranchers do?

Weed eating 3 acres sounds like pure torture. I dont have any suggestions but you've got my empathy.

Rotate them on a bi-annual basis for maximum deliciousness.

Diesel works great too. But that is an off label use.

Landscape timbers or Concrete curb under chain link to weed against and not against the fence.

Haha. It's mainly just the house and the pond I weed eat.

WE DON'T RENT PIGS.

Not sure about goats.

Roundup is like $13/gal. 1 quart will treat 1 acre broadcast.

It is literally costing you pennies per linear foot.

That will last you until the chain link fence literally falls apart and is replaced.

Imazapyr is a more permanent solution, just don't use it under trees you want to keep.

When I was a kid, my grandad would pump spray diesel along his chain link fence. The first time was for killing the growth. He would do that before we came to see him. The next time was for lighting it on fire.

Me and my brother got to follow on either side with a wet burlap sack. If the fire got in the green we went to whacking at it with our sacks. We thought it was pretty damn cool.

A guy I work with has about three acres. He bought 12 goats to help keep his grass down and said they barely put a dent in it. Part of that has been all the rain we've been getting too though. He lives in the valley though.

Hoyt,

I experimented with using salt and was very disappointed with the results.

You always hear how the Romans would salt their enemies fields and blah, blah, blah. If that really worked, they must have used one helluva lot of salt.

After spraying fully saturated salt solutions and getting marginal results at best, I tested a few areas by pouring salt directly on the ground. Frankly, it wasn't worth the effort.

Like rwv2055 mentioned, Imazapyr is probably your most effective herbicide for this application. I get between 6 and 10 months of control with a single application of it.

As chemicals go, it's fairly pricey, but you use it in very low concentrations. It is cheaper, though, because it lasts much longer than what you're using now.

I've got large requirements for 'bare ground' control, and so I mix my own, but you can find it already mixed with Glyphosate (Roundup) in the product RM43, which is available at all the big box stores.

I use RM43 as well and add about a pint of remedy to 50 gallons when I spray. Seems to keep it down longer and knock down the residual brush.

Speaking of I need to spray fence lines soon.

Saturated salt water will kill mature trees if you use enough. Saturated is around 2 lb per gallon, and you need to soak the ground with it to be very effective. Do it right and nothing will grow there for years.

Goats also don't prefer grass.

Snakes like to hide in tall grass near the fences...

I used to own 3 acres. It turns out people will let you feed their goats rent free!

It also turns out that goats don't just like poison ivy....they prefer it!

yeah, goats will keep your weeds down, but won't do much for your grass

Hand her the weedeater and see if she sees the light?

Seriously, tell her that many food plants have been intentionally modified in order to be 'Round-Up Resistant' precisely because they are raised in the presence of the herbicide. I wouldn't be surprised if the breakfast cereal the kids eat is made from corn of that variety.

Your spraying a diluted mixture on the fence line would seem to me to be a minuscule risk, if a risk at all.

Yes, I know. Some trial attorneys beg to differ.
