Just a curious question for those that might be in the know. I have lived in Central Texas for over 50 years, born and raised. Recently, I (and others) have noticed that not only on area lakes, but on tanks and ponds in the area, we seem to be having Pelicans on them for the first time I can recall. One several days, a large flock of pelicans were flying over, and I have passed by several tanks where pelicans were undoubtedly eating fish. In addition, we have flocks of seagulls flying and circling overhead on several recent occasions. Has anyone else noticed this? Any explanations? I have never seen this going on this area in my lifetime.

I've seen gulls for a long time. Not quite so much pelicans, but occasionally, yes.

Some of it could be increasing bird populations looking to exploit new resources.

We've had both here over the past month. I saw seagulls the other day over my house and had to do a double take. Can't say I've ever seen them here before. Glad I'm not crazy and the only one seeing them.

This past Saturday I saw a flock of around 300 seagulls heading roughly north between Gonzales & Luling.
I've seen them in the area periodically over the years, the squawking tips me off every time.

It certainly has been unusual. I bet those Pelicans can put a hurt on the fish population in a tank in a hurry. Especially bass in the spring when they are relatively shallow.

Maybe they're finally recovering from their post DDT population decline?

They do this every year. A lot of these birds migrate. I've been seeing this for a long time. I don't believe it is anything new. I've also seen this with large groups of raptors migrating at certain time of the year.

I don't really think it is all that new. Gulls and pelicans, especially white pelicans, have migrated throughout the state for quite a while. Seeing pelicans in smaller tanks might be a bit unusual, but they are probably just taking advantage of an opportunity. I remember seeing seagulls passing through years ago when we lived in west Texas.

I took these pictures back in 2010 from Lake Somerville, and have seen similar scenes fairly recently. There are also various species of terns that frequent the area.

For about a week we've been seeing flocks of hundreds of seagulls every morning while waiting with my daughter at the bus stop. They're all headed north-northwest as they fly over us here in Murphy. I don't recall seeing this many before and we have been here for 10 years.

I saw Pelicans at Sam Rayburn not to long ago while driving the 147 bridge. I did a double take for sure.

We have fished many times about 60 miles south of Casper, Wyoming......seen a lot white pelicans. The last 7-8 years have produced a lot of cormorants in Port Aransas which I hadn't seen before.

Flock of Seagulls. Haven't seen 'em since the early 80's.

There are thousands up here in North Dallas. They practically live at the landfill in Lewisville.
