I'm looking at getting a bay boat (probably used) to be used primarily for fishing in Matagorda or Copano bay. I've never owned a bay boat before and looking for some recommendations on a decent first boat that won't break the bank, be versatile enough (good for drift fishing as well as getting me to wade fishing spots and big enough to bring a couple friends or my kids with me. Speed is not a huge deal to me. Budget ideally would be less than $30k (and ideally closer to $20k).

Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Mind boggling array of choices with that budget. I'd go with good condition, a reliable outboard model, and a pretty generic skiff layout with a pocket tunnel and low deadrise. A good general purpose hull form for open bays that can still go reasonably shallow. There will be many choices in the 18-22 foot range.

With kids the low dead rise may be an issue. If you don't want to go skinny look at Nautic Star and Sea Hunt. I know there are many other makes out there but that's just what comes to mind right now in that price range used. Find one with a good maintained low hour for age Yamaha 2 stroke preferably oil injected.

+1 on Yamaha 2 stroke. I have an old one and it is bulletproof reliable.

yeah, the CCA TIDE magazine had an add for them with the yellow Hull for many years. It always stood out to me.

Don't forget to factor in the tax and registration into your budget. I would go to the TPWD website and look at the forms and use the tax% to arrive at actual purchase price for total budget.
Also, insurance.

If you don't plan on doing your own maintenance, distance to a mechanic that works on the brand motor you have is an important consideration.

It's the least sexy part of the package, but unless you have a slip on the water the trailer quality is huge. You have to start and end each day with the trailer. Take time to make sure you are buying one in good repair or set aside part of your budget for a new one.

Have you ridden on any bay boats you liked, or spent much time on them? If not, and event like rock the dock where you can get demo rides may be a good place to start.

Thanks - that is a good idea. I go out on them a couple times a year on guided trips so not a ton and I've never really payed attention to what I was on. As others mentioned there are so many options I got lost when trying to narrow it down.

How do you like the power pole? Thinking of adding one to the blue wave.

Is it worth it?

This is at the top of your budget, but, I'd be all over this Tran Cat 200 SVT. Tran builds a rock solid boat and stands behind them for life. Plus Yamaha SHO

I have an El Pescador 24. Just repowered with a 225 ETec.
Good boat. Stable, roomy, runs shallower than it can float (means don't stop sometimes).
250 is a lot of horsepower on that boat. I would guess that motor had been run pretty easy as 30-ish is a comfortable cruise and 45 is Not.

When running you need the motor (jackplate) down and have your kill switch lanyard attached.
Boat does not have high sides but I think it is fine for kids

Be careful with the El Pescador. Those boats can easily swap ends on you when running due to the deep V nose and almost flat bottom back end. Also, powerpoles are great but too many people have drowned when trying to swim after their boat that drifted away after the power pole worked free.

Where did you get this from? Haven't ever heard of this happening.

Swapping ends isn't unique to the El Pescador. All Tunnel Vee hull bay boats are similar, some better, some worse. Always wear a kill switch and everyone in the boat should wear a lifejacket (inflatables vest are awesome for adults). Most swapped ends are guys trying to run flat out, jacked all the way up. There just isn't much left in the water to hold it in place in a turn or something like quartering chop. Slow down, jack down as needed.

Swimming after a boat drifting away just isn't smart. That isn't really the fault of the power pole. The power pole isn't meant to be a set and forget anchor and it isn't "working loose". Tide changes or just stronger winds than the pole can handle need to be factored in. In the past, plenty of anchor ropes have come off cleats and other issues that caused boats to drift when someone isn't being smart about tying off. It really isn't a new thing, you just have more people on the water now so things happen more often.

Personally, I am not a fan of sides being the tool to prevent kids from falling off. Just my anecdotal experience, but i've seen more people (adults and kids) in the drink from leaning over medium and high side boats too far than I've seen hit the water in no side boats like a shallow sport classic. With a no side boat, kids are sitting or on their hands and knees at the sides, they can actually play in the water like like they want to and not be off balance. With sides, they have to be leaning over it and younger kids are more top heavy. Again, just a personal opinion, but something to think about.

We just upgraded from a 18' shallow sport to a 24' El Pescador CAT. Never had issues with kids on the Shallow Sport. We had the front deck extended on the El Pescador when we had it built to increase the no side area. Flat front deck extends all the way to the front of the console now instead of just a small deck up front. The cockpit area around the raised console is just low side.

And that 36V auto deploy spot lock trolling motor, and the latest electronics, and we wonder why we can't buy a boat for under $50k anymore only to spend more time, money, and headache keeping our gadgets working properly. By the way, when will someone get off their rears and start adding autopilot to bay boats as standard equipment?

A close family friend lost their son like this last summer and it also happened to another man in POC the year before. The main point, if your boat starts drifting away don't swim after it.

I'm not saying that it is only unique to the original El Pescador hull but that is the only boat that I personally have seen do that. Happened right in front of me in the ICW.

A buddy of mine has a 24' El Pescador CAT and that is a great boat. Good buy

You have to be a strong and FAST swimmer if there is a good breeze. I have swam down a boat before but we're talking 150 yards of kicking freestyle sprint. You have to know when it's too far gone, and quit chasing. I'd never trust a power pole in a place with tides or set near a drop off. Is it really so hard to get out an anchor?

I had three Shallow Sport "no sides" from 1984 until we sold the last one a month before Harvey in 2017. I never had a single kid fall off of one. I can't say the same for adults. Early on I quit letting adults use the platform over the engine for fear someone would fall in the boat...........maybe break a rod.

My auto-deploy Minn Kota with Spot-Lock is the best thing to happen to my boat since the Power Pole. I've had way more aggravation & frustration dicking around with anchors and hand driven trolling motors than I've ever had with my current setup. Know why it costs so much? 'Cause it's motherfeckin' worth it!!

here's the advice I gave my dad last year when he decided he wanted a bay boat. Not a lot of recent boat experience, little to no shallow water boat experience:

Find a pre-02 (maybe include 02, I forget when they changed ownership) Kenner in the length you want, with a yamaha 2 stroke in good shape, minimal electronics, and spend a year putting dings in it as you learn the ropes (boating as well as navigating your home water) and figure out what you want in a boat. If you still like owning a boat after that, sell it for what you paid and buy the boat you decide you really want at that point

but he decided he didn't want an ugly boat so we've been dinging up the pretty boat he bought instead. Oh well, his money

I would buy a used Majek Illusion - thats what i want.

Can run really shallow and has ability to run across the open water.
