Company is expanding to Nashville and I'd like to know more about pro's and con's of living there before exploring any opportunities. Anyone on the board live there? Travel there frequently? How has it compared to Texas? I grew up in a smaller town south of Dallas and have lived in Houston for the last 12 years. Married with 4 kids. Love outdoors, but need city for customer base (banking/investments). Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

Where are you and your wife's parents located and do they help out with the kids? Siblings, cousins?

Are you a beach/saltwater person?

Nashville is a great town, you get real seasons, friendly people, good food & entertainment options. I would prefer it to Houston, but, raising kids away from grandparents and extended family is not something I would ever want to do. Personally, I'd miss the Texas bays too much as well.

Then again, I don't live in Houston. If I did, I'd probably be begging to transfer to Nashville

If I lived outside of Texas it would be Nashville. If I didn't grow up and have family ties and a career in Houston it's probably where's I'd want to live.

I believe all the elites live in Brentwood and on farms outside of Franklin. That's about all I know. Keep us updated on where you end up!

Ha! 6 years ago I said you couldn't pay me enough to live in Houston. I lived in Houston from 6th grade to graduating high school then the family moved back home to Odessa as I went to school.

6 years of living in Chicago and I was happy to move to Houston. Hell I'd have even moved to Austin and maybe El Paso.

My wife is from New Braunfels and wouldn't minded moving there necessarily except her sister and my nieces are there and it's not a small town any longer.

Also being in Houston I'm only an hour and 20 minutes from my pace in Sargent and all the bay fishing you can take.

Visited there a few years ago. Didn't much care for it personally. I'm sure it is a great place in some ways to live but it seems isolated somewhat for me. You're like 3-4 hours (drive) from almost anything, but then again that might be a plus as you're like 6 hours or less from almost everything not West or Northeast/west. There's nothing there that would pull me out of Texas unless I was able to go full time into the music industry. Maybe Texas is just my comfort zone and Tennessee isn't. But remember that Davy Crockett left Tennessee to come to Texas!

Highway system is odd, to say the least. It will take you a few weeks to figure out. Not exactly tornado alley but they do get severe weather. I would suggest you spend a few days or a couple of weeks there if you can before you decide.

I live in East Tenn, but would never move to Nashville. Too big, highways suck. Lots of stuff to do, but not my style.

The only things I miss about Texas are the Texas Aggies, friends, and the food.

Other than that, y'all can have the two seasons (hot and not as hot).

Was just there and it is growing at an incredible clip. Lots of cranes, freeway expansions, etc. it's a clean city without as many bums as you would see elsewhere. I'd prefer to live outside of any city but it's not a bad one. Austin completely sucks compared to Nashville.

My BIL lives in Murfreesboro outside Nashville. It is a great place to live and raise a family. If I had to leave TX, and couldn't go west, Nashville would be my first choice.

I LOVE Nashville, and echo a lot of others here in that if I had to leave Texas, Nashville would be my first choice. HUGE upgrade from Houston to be sure.

As others have mentioned, it is growing fast. It's also like Austin in the sense that Nashville is a very liberal, blue island in a sea of red if that matters to you. Beautiful city, very clean but the traffic is awful. Unlike Austin, Nashville actually does have a loop and better infrastructure but the traffic is still very bad, so be aware. The roads in Tennessee are actually quite bad too from a maintenance standpoint so be aware of the wear and tear it'll put on your vehicle (I got a flat tire there on the first day from a damn pothole on the interstate).

Housing is also very expensive within the city, again like Austin. East Nashville is the old ghetto, and now the "up and coming" part of town that is being gentrified. Small homes going for insanely high amounts of dough.

Can't speak to the schools or the suburbs for family raising, though. My first inclination would be it can't be any worse than Houston, that's for sure.

So long story short if I were you I'd move there from Houston in a heart beat.
CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

It costs roughly 5% more to live in Nashville than Houston:

Cost comparison Houston vs. Nashville

It's a great city, but growing like crazy. Kinda wish we were closer (we live 2 1/2 hours from the Nashville Airport). The affluent and very affluent suburbs of Brentwood and Franklin are a few minutes south of the city.

Living in Tennessee was an easy transition....at least it was for us.

Completely agree with that statement. One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the lack of guardrails. My daily drive (granted, it's East Tennessee, which is very hilly), includes several stretches where the drop off is at least 50 feet and there are no guardrails.

Update: One thing I didn't notice in the cost of living comparison is taxes are not part of the comparison. If that's the case, the cost of living in Nashville may not be any different than Houston. For example, property taxes in Tennessee, compared to Texas, are ridiculously cheap. If you live in the county they are even cheaper. However, the sales taxes are high (close to 10%). Also, groceries are taxed at something like 6.75%.

Lots of Houston hate up in here. Never thought I would move to Houston, but I have been here for the last 7 years and have enjoyed it. Never had much of a commute so I don't have much to complain about.

Visited Nashville and have friends that have lived there or currently do and really enjoyed it. Lots of similarities to Texas and no state income tax.

IMHO, there is a correlation here. Blue folks, that like socialist programs and giving out money to everyone who can raise their hand, very rarely prioritize spending any of their dollars on hard infrastructure and physical improvements to city assets, like expanding roads, adding more capacity to existing roads, etc.

I wouldn't want to live outside of Texas, but If I were to move, it would have to be coastal. Alaska, Hawaii, and Florida would top my list. Otherwise, I am not very interested. I hope it works out for you, if you decide to go.

Nashville is the Austin of Tennessee. If you think you would like living in Austin, Nashville will probably be good for you.

If you don't like living in Austin, like me, then should probably stay away from Nashville. Then again, it is still better than Houston.

East Tennessee is where I want to move to.

We moved to Nashville from Houston in the summer of 2017 and have loved it. Aside from missing Mexican food, HEB, and friends/family, everything else has been great. Our situation is a little different from yours (no kids), so we live in East Nashville. Traffic can be bad depending on time of day and where you're heading, but no worse than anything in Houston. Feel free to email me at username@gmail if you have any other specifics you want info on.

ITL dweller, with family here. H'Tine ain't bad. Gotta know how to operate. And it helps that my house is a 5 minute walk to Buffalo Bayou park and we just hit the stretch where the highs are in the 70s and its always sunny outside.

Tonight once we get the kids down, the missus and I will be in the yard drinking wine, watching garbage on TV, and enjoying it.

Nashville/Austin/Denver are the three "cool" cities to live in right now.

A lot of people move to those places and realize it's maybe just better to visit than actually live.

I love Denver....have family there and my best friend use to live there

No beef whatsoever with it - just may not live up to expectations for some people.

I used to live in Austin for what its worth and have been to Nashville a ton and had family live there.
