I'm thinking I'll be in the market for a new(or newish) pickup in the coming months so I wanted to see what the OB is driving these days. I've heard Fords have consistent problems, the Japanese trucks seems to have terrible fuel economy, and while I was anti Government Motors(GM) for a while I'm liking what I've seen of the GMC 1500s and their Chevy counterparts. Thoughts? I'll mostly use it to commute for work out in the country, but might occasionally offroad on CRP(family land), I also like to travel so I'd like decent range and a mediocre MPG.

Hopefully this isn't too controversial.

I wanted a GMC. Found the best deal (bells and whistles in comparison to price) on the Ram I currently drive. My advice would be to look what you need out of it, then look at wants. Once you come up with that, balance that with what you CAN do. Trucks now are ridiculously priced.

A lot of Ford fanboys on here. You just derailed your own thread with the Ford comment.

ETA: I drive a Chevy, have a 45 mile commute and that thing gets pretty awesome gas mileage for what it is.

They are all basically the same. Pick the one you like the most.

I always drove Fords or Chevy's with no particular brand loyalty. I now drive a Ram and I like it. You will have a hard time beating Ram in the bang for your buck category.

I don't doubt the RAM but the saying around here is that people that buy Dodge are about to go broke.

90% of the guys on the OB drive a Ford F-450 King Ranch Edition Dually. So get that.

Do yourself a favor and buy they epoxy/windshield crack repair kits. Every vehicle around here has a cracked windshield from all the ****ty roads.

From an FMC (fleet) prospective we have seen an increase in downtime for 2019 Chevy half tons so far.

The other two majors are holding steady with cost of ownership.

For used trucks, I always recommend certified Fords, but I'm not loyal to any one brand and every truck is different.

Buy the seat your butt and back likes the best is my advice.

Edit* If you're around Midland/Hodessa area I do not recommend a Ram. Simply because of the low scores their warranty and repair centers receive (earn).

I've owned both Chevrolet and Ford, with pros and cons of each. Own an F-150 with zero issues since 2016, My Chevys from earlier in 2000s were great, too. But then you have a perfect summation of how much design thinking went into the interior for the Ram (not much):

It won't impact you if you aren't a moron, but it is a microcosm of the Ram's design. https://news.pickuptrucks.com/2016/12/dodge-ram-eight-speed-gear-shifters-under-investigation.html

Diesel or gas? Half ton or 3/4 ton?

I went from a Ford F250 ('01) to a Dodge 2500('15). Ergos on the Dodge are way better, but it's also not really a fair comparison because the trucks were 14 years apart. Huge difference in technology between 2001 and 2015.

Prefer the engine on the Ford, but again - not a fair comparison because the Ford didn't have the DEF/DPF system that the .gov mandates on all diesels now, so it was significantly less maintenance and less opportunity for problem. But the Dodge is way quieter, smoother ride and even with all of that garbage added and a 4" lift, I get better mileage out of it than the 7.3.

If you aren't hauling or towing much, take a look at the Ram 1500 Eco diesels. Some complain they lack power and get up, but I didn't find them to be slow and had no complaints about getting up to speed. Granted, it was only a test drive, so hard to really say if that is realistic or not. But cruising down the highway at 75 in the one I drove, I was getting something like 28 or 29 mpg. They don't tow as much as some of the other half tons though, so there are drawbacks - one of them being that Dodge has done a piss poor job on availability.

Chevy and Ford half tons are what they have always been - pretty solid and reliable, each with good points and each with drawbacks. Dont' know much about the Nissans with the Cummins in them, other than I see more of them on the road despite the fact that they are fugly. Toyota is awesome with their smaller vehicles, but they haven't made the transition to full size well IMO - trucks are not appealing to look at to me, ergos are meh and the mileage in them is not good compared to Chevy, Ford or Dodge.

No matter what, be prepared to replace a windshield every 5 years due to chipping, cracking or sandblasting from the environment. I went through similar in El Paso and AZ, which was a learning curve for me on that end.

That link was from almost 3 years ago and Ram is still using the same gear selection rotary dial.

I'm a Ram fan and am in the market for a new one just waiting on the new body style 3/4 tons to hit the market. The gear selector is the only thing I don't like on the new rams.

I should have stated in OP, looking for a half ton. I'm not picky on diesel vs gas but I am lazy(just being honest) so I don't know how much more maintenance a diesel would need over ga. I know nothing about diesel engines but if the upkeep difference is minimal, I'm not opposed to it and diesel access is not a problem in my town.

Oh I know it was. But it remains - they had transmission problems. I didn't like the 8-speed either.

Drove a buddy's several times. That knob remains a stupid design decision, and I feel like it is mirrored in most of the other interior decisions, including menus, etc.

Really depends on your use. And I don't know about the Ecodiesels versus the Cummins in the bigger trucks.

Normal maintenance is the same - oil and filter changes, with added fuel filter changes when you do oil changes. But it's not a huge issue. DEF is added when needed, and on my Cummins I have a DPF maintenance I have to do every 70k miles, so not frequent at all.

And even regular oil changes aren't necessary as frequently as most people do them. I use full synthetic Royal Purple, full oil and filter change every 20k, filter change with new oil top off every 5k. Clean my air filter every 5k, fuel filter every 10 on average. I do have to admit that whomever designed the oil filter, or at least all of the crap they put around it, and didn't allow for easy access from below on the newer 6.4 Cummins needs to be beaten repeatedly as pennance for the remainder of their life. And the higher ups that approved said design.
