It has been quite a while since I had to replace a fence. My neighbor is getting his replaced and asked that I pay 1/2 of the cost of the fence we share. His fence guy gave him an estimate with it broken down for each neighbor. They have it at $1536 for the 48' section I share with him.

It will have:
Metal posts in concrete sunk to 3'
All cedar wood including the rails
Kicker board on bottom
Trim on top
pickets will be 1"x6"x6'
Stained upon completion

$32/foot seems a little high to me especially since two of the 4 posts on my shared section are freshly replaced with metal posts. They shouldn't have to replace them.

He has only had one estimate done and he seems ready to roll with it. I told him it seems a high.

Thoughts?

I know I could get some contractors out here for an estimate, but that is a pain in the ass. I remember that much from having my last fence here done myself.

That seems high to me. But kinda depends on some things. Is the toe board 2x12 with a bevelled cut on top? What type of trim at the top? Why are the 2x4s cedar? That is just wasted money for cedar 2x4s.

It might not be that high if top cap is cedar and a big toe board out of cedar too. Are they tearing out existing fence?

Push back on it. If I was a fence guy and new the neighbors where all sharing the cost I would be inclined to start high on my pricing.

Regular suburb builder grade 6' fence is about $3-4/LF in material. Plus 3-4/LF in labor. Now that is cheap with a big scale for doing lots of it. But 32/ft seems high. Ask for matl and labor break down.

Are they using all screws? What type?
