Figured this might be the best board to post this in.

I am at a loss, of how, or why, these annoying - as I call them gnat/fly things, keep multiplying in my living room.

This is a recent phenomenon. They are NOT fruit flies. Too large. They are large enough where I can easily snatch them in my hand and crush them, and also large enough to where when they flutter around my TV its annoying as all get out. They are NOT attracted to the TV/light so it's not a moth. But not big enough to be something easily observed, like say a dragonfly or something.

My place is very hygienic. I have a maid come in once a month to clean my home. Yet, these ****s still persist in my living room.

So first, what are these things, two, how can I get rid of them? I seem to kill one or two a night and the battle is won, yet when the next evening rolls around, here they are again.

May fly.

Spring came early this year.

This is my guess. Also called crane flies.

Edit: missed the part about them not being obvious. Crane flies are big and noticeable. Do you have potted plants in your house?

Guessing you are talking about Crane fly aka Mosquito Hawks (or in some places Daddy-Long Legs).

Mild winter and this warmup in parts of Texas has them out already.

Not a mosquito hawk. Way smaller. Couldn't take a pic, it's too small. Would just look like a spec if I tried on my iPhone.

Drain flies, perhaps? Pour some bleach into every drain.

Maybe a drain fly. We had these in a bathroom at one point. Googled a remedy and found something that took care of the problem.

I believe you are describing "cluster flies". Large, slow moving flies that are attracted to the light. Here's my story: We returned from watching the Fightin' Texas AGGIE baseball team weekend series. I am unloading the car, my wife comes screaming out into the garage demanding to know where the bug spray is. I tell her, and she grabs the can and screams back inside the house. I follow to see what in the world has her in such a state. (No rule #1). She's spraying and yelling and looks like a woman possessed. I ask, what the deal is. She yells, the front windows are completely covered with hundreds of flies!!!!! She has opened the shutters to let the light in, and has discovered both 4'X 6' windows are covered with black flies. When I say covered, I am not exaggerating. She has sprayed, but alas, the slow moving flies have now dispersed throughout the great room and are on the ceiling, walls, furniture and anything else they can find. Okay, now she is mad and a bit apoplectic. Some of the flies that she managed to spray have fallen on the floor, but the ones that she didn't get are now slowly making their way back to the "light" of the windows. I have gone to get the shop vac and she is closing all the doors to the other parts of the house, looking at the computer, and franticly calling the exterminator(AGGIES). She is describing the slow moving, huge black flies, and they are telling they will have to get back to her. Not the right answer. We are waiting by the "light" coming from the windows, shop vac in hand, and sucking those suckers up as fast as we can. Hour later, maybe 200 flies later, the exterminator calls back, "CLUSTER FLIES". They haven't ever seen them in Rockport, but because of the extreme moisture, the grubs in the grass, their food source, they are showing up here.
Okay, that's my story. Go google and see if perhaps this is your problem, OP. Side note, whenever they come to spray our house every quarter and there is a new tech, the new person always says, "Oh, your house is the slow fly house." Oh well, I guess it just goes with being a homeowner.
