Picked this thing up today, don't know much about it, but i've wanted a good anvil for a while to tinker around with and this was priced right. Obviously used, but the tool steel face is in pretty solid shape, still relatively flat and I figured what the hell. I have no aspirations of making swords or suits of armor, but if I ever get around to obtaining or building a forge, I have a good foundation to tinker with now. I think its about 65-70 pounds.

We had one like that in our shop when I was growing up. I used it hundreds of times to blow up complete rolls of caps with a sledgehammer.

You'll want to secure it down somehow. One that light will definitely "walk" with enough swangin' and bangin'.

Yessir, on the new list of things to do is research different methods of constructing bases. My initial thought is to go cut a large section of oak from one of the trees at the lease, seems to have worked for a few hundred years so far. But i also know that there are bases and what no you can buy, may look into one of those since it will be easier to move - and i know that right now no matter where I put this thing, it will be in the way.

What's the rebound like when you drop a hammer from 3"-5"? Does it have a nice ping sound? Looks to be a solid piece of badassery.

I've posted this on here before. This is a friend in Lampasas that is hardcore into blacksmithing. He resurfaces anvils, also makes bases, striker anvils, forges, and custom tools. You could probably get some ideas for bases looking at his IG.

I think if I were to ever possess an anvil, I would have to stencil ACME on it...just on principle alone.

Now you need to buy/build a forge and you'll be set.

Cleaned it up some tonight, found a very faint makers mark on the side. Southern Crescent is the manufacturer, it is a 70 lb anvil. Cast iron with a tool steel face forge welded to it and a steel face on the horn.

Not much known about this brand, what I have read is that they are a lower mid tier brand, made in Chattanooga from about 1925 to 1936. Not a Fisher or Hay Budden, but it will do for me.

I've been wanting one for a while. I was shocked when I saw the prices.

I was taking a welding class at a local community college and the shop also had a blacksmithing program/classes.
