Any recommendations on type?

Never used any... wondering if it is needed or warranted.

Do you just wipe it on and let it soak in?

I bought a Boo's Block, and it recommends oiling the block at least once a month if not used. I oil it each time after I use it. They sell their own "mystery oil" and board cream as well. Both work good!

If you don't oil it... the board will start to separate and splinter as well.

mineral oil. or a mineral oil/beeswax mix.

I like Howard's Butcher Block conditioner.

I use my wood board pretty much daily. I put it on as soon as the wood starts to look dry (vs its usually wet look). In the winter that is once every week or two, in the summer it is once or twice a month. Humidity changes effect how fast it drys out.

I squeeze a healthy amount onto the dry, clean board and rub it in with a wash cloth. I leave it wet looking, but not extra and wipe it with a clean paper towel an hour or two later to make sure there isn't any residue that didn't absorb.

If you keep it well conditioned, it will take a long time for an end grain board to show much wear.

I use Howard butcher block conditioner on my oak countertops. Initially I treated them with mineral oil (gallon jug from Tractor Supply) to get a baseline condition, and then use the Howard stuff twice a year or so ever since.

I just use olive oil on our butcher block island in the kitchen. Still looks great after 17 years.

Food grade mineral oil. You can find it in the pharmacy.

Don't use a fat based oil like this. Use mineral oil (buy the stuff for old people in pharmacy, much cheaper than mineral oil labeled for wood, same stuff) or a butchers block type oil suggested above. I use mineral oil and it works perfect and its super cheap.

+1 to that. Organic oils can sometimes go bad. I have not had it happen myself, bit have heard of it happening, and it starts to put a bad/sour smell off from the board.

Just go to Home Depot and grab a bottle of Howard's mineral oil or conditioner. The mineral oil is more of of a first soak but since I'm assuming you are adding it to a used board, do a light sanding and rub on some of the conditioner

Mineral oils may indeed be better, but Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a long shelf life opened and doesn't go rancid like other oils. At least not in the 2-3 year time frame. However, anything that needs to be kept in a cold and dark place would definitely fit within what you're talking about here.

I've had a Walmart board for several years, haven't oiled it at all, and it is fine. Used it yesterday. It might have to do as much with the humidity level of your house or where it is stored.

If you go the mineral oil route, go to tractor supply and buy the gallon jug for $17.99 in the livestock health section instead of paying $10-15 for the same thing in a 16oz bottle labeled "cutting board oil".
