We have red foxes all the time and I first assumed this was a fox based on how he moved but then I started second guessing myself.

I took them through a window in my living room. He was cautious but didn't seem to care too much about me. We get animals (mulies, elk, fox, bear, etc) all the time up by the house but hadn't seen a coyote before.

The reason I thought it could be a fox the way he moved and pounced when he was trying to catch voles.

100% coyote. Should be easy to tell on first glance. Do an image search of both coyotes and grey and red foxes and study the form of the head and body and you'll be able to spot clear differences.

He's a canid, just a bigger one than a fox. Foxes are a little more cat-like in their pounces, but coyotes have the same set of senses and same body plan, just scaled up a bit, so they hunt the same prey in much the same way.

Grew up same area same time we got 45$ for a carcass during the winter. Talk about great beer money
