Seeing the knife making threads on here over the years always made me want to start making knives (Like I didn't already have enough hobbies). I knew I didn't really want to hand file, so kept looking around at a belt grinder. I almost bought a harbor freight 1x30 several times, but then I'd see enough post elsewhere about how terrible they really are for metal.

I really like building things, so I finally decided to build my own 2x72 grinder over the summer. Looked at all kinds of plans and finally found a set off Reddit for a nice no weld grinder that I liked and could do easily, of course I then modified and made it more like some other commercial offerings, but used the basic dimensions from the original. Modified to use a 2nd tool arm, which is super nice for a work rest mount. Pieced the parts together over a couple months. Bought all metal cut, could save some more without it. Bought a lot of part using the ebay 15% off codes that have been running a lot this year. Overall, saved some money and had fun piecing it together.

Plans I started from linked in this post https://www.reddit.com/r/knifemaking/comments/7uujhg/my_diy_no_weld_belt_grinder/

Finished product, 2x72 grinder, 1.5hp 3 phase motor, running a KBDA-27D VFD (Liked the KBDA a lot better than the KBAC, basically the same price). Platen and wheels are OBM. I have mounted the work rest on another tool arm since taking these. Still need to buy a Large wheel, but that can wait a bit yet. I will be making a more permanent base for it, but this works for now.

Of course, if I was going to the work of doing things myself, I would need a propane forge for heat treating (heat treating simple steels anyway, not doing any more complicated steels right now), so I made this for cheap, uses 2x 1/2" Frosty T burners that I made( Plans available from google).

Test Firing and tuning:

Then I could start grinding some steel

First knife, 1080 steel with black micarta scales. Screw up bevel/plunge lines a bit, so I didn't bother taking surface all the way perfect, Plenty of other mistakes but was a big learning experience. Forced patina on the metal for a bit of corrosion resistance.

Second Knife, 1080 steel with mesquite scales, forced patina again. I only had 1.5" material, otherwise I would have a little more curve in the spine. I did work a bit too fast on grinding pins, so burned a bit around them, need to work handle a little slower Pin placement could have been much better. I like the feel of this one a lot, hoping to test out this weekend if I have any luck in the deer stand.

So far its been a lot of fun. Lots of learning to go!

I went down that research rabbit hole a few years ago. Decided not to pull the trigger. Looks awesome OP!

Nice work! On both the grinder and knives! Look forward to seeing more...

Very nice! Love the grinder DIY. It sure looks like a fun hobby that I'm resisting for the next few years....

Still looking for my anvil to start forging knives. Stock removal is good, but hitting hit steel is so much fun! Very nice grinder!

I do agree about forging, but with a 3 month old and a 2.5 yo at home, banging steel at night isn't the best idea. They still go to bed early, so I have plenty of evening time to work as long as it isn't super loud. Table saw an what not are fine, but hammer on metal might be a bit much.

Trying to find polishing compounds for my buffing wheel. The large clay bar type. Suggestions? Has been referred to as jewelers rouge. All I can find are little sticks of it.

Awesome job on the grinder and knives. Beware though, it's an addicting hobby.

Its finally starting to cool down enough that I can start working on making knives again. I'd love to play around with forging but alas I live on the Texas gulf coast and standing over a hot forge swinging a hammer would kill me (or at least take the fun out of it).

Thanks, I like that it is addictive. It's nice that, for the most part, I can start and stop if needed. I don't have to to dedicate a lot of time in one shot.

It's not the easiest thing, but I like that errors are quick to see and at this stage is mostly lost time as the materials I'm using aren't that expensive.

I hope you're not asking me! I'm barely getting started on knife making,. I make a ton of mistakes and don't even know what I don't know yet but just roll with it and change plans as needed.

And I'm in Houston anyway.

That is the perfect attitude... Steel is cheap compared to the time it takes to shape it.

I wasn't being 100% serious on the lessons but it's always cool to see how someone built there tools and such. Keep it up man! Good work!

Let me know if you branch out into other metals or need help heat treating... I would be more than happy to help you out (and learn any tricks you have].

I'm kind of a metallurgy geek and love playing around with complex heat treatment. My next purchase is a molten salt bath.

Edit: I'm located in Lake Jackson/Clute area.

I want to start making knives also. Wish I knew of some guys here in CS. I know there was that A&M professor that was on Forged...but not sure he lives here.

Thanks again, I'll keep you in mind. I know I will start branching out more on steels, just like to do my own stuff and didn't want to buy a HT oven right off the bat, already spent enough to get started!

Having a resource to talk to will be helpful in the future.

Your post about knife making last fall was one of the ones I was referring to that really got the itch going.

Totally understand where you're coming from. I was in the same place a few years ago. I've reinvested almost everything I've earned from knife making and then some. Keep up the good work and post any future knives.

He still lives here and makes amazing knives. There's a knife show coming up in Conroe on the 17th where a lot of those Forged guys will be there. Could be a good way to talk shop and see whom is around CS.

Do you do any sheath work?

Need to figure out what to do about that. The kitchen knives i have planned aren't an issue, but skinners or what not will need something.

Never done leather or Kydex work, but kydex seems like an easy starting point before jumping into leather.
Tx-Ag2010

No I haven't had the time to get into making sheaths.

Most knife makers supply shops have a bunch of different premade leather sheaths for pretty cheap. ~$15. I usually take my knives to Texas Knife makers supply (in Houston) and they find one that fits well enough.

One of the more badass things I've seen in a while. Only criticism is that propane tank next to the fire.

Making DIY gas manifold and propane burners and the tank is your biggest concern?

Yep, definitely the safety guy...

JK. Definitely a valid concern and not really a bad criticism. I already swapped to a new hose so I could run it further away, that was just the only picture I had.

I started making knives this past spring and just completed my first knife.

It a knife for a buddy who's invited us to come hunt his farm in W Va, so I used the blue & gold for WVU and curly Sugar Maple (State tree) for the scales. It's 0-1 tool steel. It not perfect but I like it.

When I started, I went cheap...HF 1x30, angle grinder and propane torch to try and heat treat. I've ground several "blades" but kept realizing I needed better tools and techniques. I probably watch 10-20 YouTube videos a week. (Walter Sorrells & Simple Little Life). Now I think I'm spending (and enjoying) making tools and jigs that help perfect my techniques as much as I enjoy making knives.

The first thing I got was a Dewalt Portaband and SWAG table. I had to fab a stand, so I bought a Hobart 140 welder and taught myself to weld.

Then I created a better grinding jig. My first one was angle iron with a bolt and c-camp. Now I have this one

Once I was a decent welder I designed and built this gas forge to HT my blades.

The absolute best thing is my new 2x72 from OBM. I got the work rest, flat platten and small wheel attachment. Plus 2hp motor and VFD. I only use ceramic or trizact belts. I welded up the stand and dust collection system.

I designed a makers mark and ordered a stencil from Ernie and then built an electro chemical etcher from watching YouTube to etch my blades.

I'm now working on building up my stuff to do kydex sheaths.

It really is as much fun building your tool sets as it is grinding a knife. Now I need to get started on making knives for everyone who wants one.

To be fair, this is the first one I've completed. I have a bunch a stuff that I started and scrapped because they sucked or I was trying new stuff. I even worked with mild steel just to get my techniques down.
